Summer little league right around the corner.

WILLIAMS—Spring signals the beginning of baseball season and training for summer little league.

Unfortunately, Coach Richard Aguilar will not be with us this season. Lee Payne has taken up his coaching job and wants to purchase new Astros uniforms for the team. The uniforms will include emblems in honor of the late Coach Aguilar. Mr Aguilar was an active participant in organizing the barbeque to welcome the annual Run For The Wall veterans.

Lee has received some donations for new uniforms and is working with the American Legion Cordova Post #13 to come up with the rest of the approximately $900 for the uniforms. To that end they are holding a raffle which features a Smokey the Bear baseball autographed by retired local pro Billy Hatcher.

While writing this article, other donations were made which include a Jillian Michaels training set. Jillian is the personal trainer who became known for the reality series The Biggest Loser. Johnny Hatcher donated a Diamondbacks hat autographed by Luis Gonzales with a certificate of authenticity.

Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. The drawing is scheduled for next Friday evening, the 29th of March, at the American Legion. Tickets may be obtained through the American Legion Post or by calling Lee Payne at 928-607-7918. If you are not interested in the prizes, a small donation would also be welcome to benefit the team and the Williams Little League.

Mr. Payne noted that any money collected in excess of the uniforms will go to the Williams Little League.

U.S. soldier accused of Afghan killings faces “sanity” review

By Laura L. Myers

SEATTLE (Reuters) – Doctors opened a medical review Sunday on a U.S. soldier charged with killing 16 civilians, most of them women and children, near his Army post in Afghanistan in an effort to determine his state of mind at the time of the killings and ability to stand trial.

The review, known in the military as a “sanity board,” will be conducted by three doctors at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, and will be completed by May 1, according to a U.S. Army spokesman.

The hearing started on Sunday morning and is expected to continue for several days, base spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Gary Dangerfield said.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Robert Bales, a decorated veteran of four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan accused of gunning down the villagers in cold blood during two rampages through their family compounds in Kandahar province last March.

VA wait times mean some die before getting care

“The bottom line is it is unclear how long veterans are waiting to receive care in VA’s medical facilities because the reported data are unreliable,” Draper told the panel.

By Patricia Kime – Staff writer

Internal Veterans Affairs Department documents show that at least two veterans died last year waiting to see a doctor while others couldn’t get primary care appointments for up to eight months, members of a House oversight and investigations panel said Thursday.

Addressing the ongoing problem of vets who suffer through long waits for appointments at VA hospitals and clinics, House lawmakers joined federal investigators and veterans service organizations in castigating VA on an issue that has endured for more than a decade.

“Evidence shows that many VA facilities, when faced with a backlog of thousands of outstanding or unresolved consultations, decided to administratively close out these requests. Some reasons given included that the request was years old, too much time had elapsed, or the veteran had died,” said Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., chairman of the House Veterans Oversight and Investigations panel.

“This is unacceptable,” said Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., the panel’s ranking Democrat. “Veterans deserve timely, accessible health care.”

According to VA, about 49 percent of new patients and 90 percent of established patients are able to see a primary care doctor or specialist within VA’s goal of 14 days, a metric established in 2011.

But the first-time patients who weren’t seen within 14 days waited an average 50 days to schedule initial appointments.

Protesters enraged over the fatal shooting of a teenager by police poured into Brooklyn streets for a third straight night Wednesday, pitching bricks, bottles and garbage in furious clashes with cops.

At least 46 demonstrators were arrested along Church Ave. in East Flatbush. Police struggled to control a hostile crowd that broke away from a planned peaceful vigil for Kimani (Kiki) Gray, 16, killed by police on Saturday night.

Gray’s sister Mahnefeh was among those arrested. A police officer suffered a gash in the face when a tossed brick hit him, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said, and a window was smashed in an inspector’s car.

Guns and Ammo ranks Arizona number 1 gun-friendly State

Guns and Ammo examined States on what they consider five categories of gun friendliness. There were ten points awarded for each category. Arizona topped their list, though not with a perfect score.

Arizona got a 49 because while Arizona law allows open or concealed carry (with or without permit), when you get stopped you must inform the police officer or Sherrif’s Deputy that you are carrying concealed. This is really a non-issue to the legal Arizona citizens legally carrying.

It should be noted, too, that when you do inform the officer, he may ask you to surrender it for the duration of the stop. Most probably won’t except for Phoenix and Tuscon.

The top ten State from the bottom up are:

10. New Hampshire
9. Missouri
8. Kansas
7. Alabama
6. Wyoming
5. Kentucky
4. Utah
3. Alaska
2. Vermont
1. Arizona

Barricade suspect: ‘I was chased … They were trying to kill me’

TEMPE, Ariz. — Police have arrested a man who barricaded himself inside a room at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe Thursday morning.

According to Arizona State University police, this all started shortly after 5 a.m when they received a call from a man who said he was being followed through the campus. The man reportedly sounded extremely nervous and frightened, apparently certain that he was being targeted.

ASU police converged on the area between Wells Fargo Arena and Sun Devil Stadium, immediately setting up a perimeter and launching a search.

The man managed to break into Sun Devil Stadium and barricaded himself inside a room. In speaking with officers, he apparently mentioned that he was armed. That turned out not to be the case, but, not knowing exactly what they were dealing with, police had to do their due diligence and exercise extreme caution.

The dam runneth over.

santa-fe-20130313 002WILLIAMS—The melting snow and ice off of the reservoir at the Santa Fe dam started its seasonal spring overflow causing Cataract Creek to begin running. There is enough water flowing to satisfy even the Cataract Creek Gang (if it were Whiskey). This is good news to the residents of the community that saw little snowfall last year.

The forecast for the area shows temperatures just above the 70-degree mark Thursday and Friday dropping to mid-60s for Saturday and Sunday with some cloudiness. Nighttime temperatures will be around the mid-30s. The bad news is that it could drop to around 58 by next Wednesday. No moisture is predicted.

The lack of moisture in the forecast is not devastating, however, since there is still snow and ice left to melt.
