The 12 Days of Williams: July 2014
Sheriff Julian Whittington of Bossier Parish, Louisiana vowed that the ACLU would not stop the second annual “In God We Trust” rally. One editorial noted that it “…followed the best of our traditions.” He took the line from the Supreme Court decision of Zorach v. Clauson, 343 U.S. 306 in which they stated:
We are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being. We guarantee the freedom to worship as one chooses. We make room for as wide a variety of beliefs and creeds as the spiritual needs of man deem necessary. We sponsor an attitude on the part of government that shows no partiality to any one group and that lets each flourish according to the zeal of its adherents and the appeal of its dogma. When the state encourages religious instruction or cooperates with religious authorities by adjusting the schedule of public events to sectarian needs, it follows the best of our traditions. For it then respects the religious nature of our people and accommodates the public service to their spiritual needs.
In preparation for the Independence Day holiday, we presented a good read from the “Father of the Constitution,” James Madison. His paper, known as Property or On Property, is one of his unpublished papers reflecting his thoughts on what property is. Here is another thought by our fourth President. You might be interested in some thoughts on the Tenth Amendment. Here is a quote from Thomas Jefferson.
A newspaper owned by Benjamin Franklin which became available at an auction contained a simple report of a significant event in American history. It confirms that Independence was actually declared on July 2.
In the midst of celebrating our Independence, the administration allegedly celebrated by suing an American company for requiring their workers to speak English. In Mississippi a disgruntled former employee entered Keith’s Superstore and stabbed the manager eight times. A concealed carry permit holder chased the criminal down and held him for police. The manager then posted no guns signs.
Arizona was accused in court of denying drivers licenses to immigrants. This, of course, is a lie. Arizona denied licenses to illegal aliens. Recently the courts ordered Arizona to start issuing licenses to illegal aliens. Arizona was accused of batching an execution because Joseph Rudolph Wood III snored before he died. Unlike his victims who died in pain.
July 27 is a day to honor Korean War veterans in Arizona.
After the devastating Slide Rock fire, State Route 89A and Oak Creek Canyon businesses started opening.
The forest near Williams suffered some lightning caused fires. 32-year old Rocky Deibler of Williams lost his life in a one vehicle accident near Williams. An inmate committed suicide at the Coconino County Detention Facility.
Bearizona held its annual Backwoods BBQ.
Kaibab National Forest Seasonal Fire Positions Announced
FREDONIA, Ariz. – The Forest Service is seeking individuals to fill the following fire positions on the North Kaibab Ranger District: fire lookouts, forestry technician/engines, and materials handler.

Maintenance work tomorrow on SR 169 near the Interstate 17 traffic interchange
Maintenance work along a segment of State Route 169 near the Interstate 17 traffic interchange (mileposts 14-15) tomorrow between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. will require a lane closure, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Traffic will be narrowed to one lane through the work zone for approximately one mile = and traffic will be directed through the work zone in alternating directions. Drivers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.
The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
Lane restrictions on Interstate 17 next week for routine maintenance work
The Arizona Department of Transportation has scheduled routine maintenance work on Interstate 17 next week, in both directions, from Table Mesa Road to just south of State Route 169.
Work hours are Monday, Jan. 12 through Wednesday, Jan. 14 between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Crews will work in three-mile segments between mileposts 235 and 277 that will require alternating lane restrictions in both directions and intermittent shoulder closures during work hours to provide a safe work zone for maintenance crews. No delays are expected.
The speed limit through the work zones will be reduced to 45 mph during work hours. Arizona Revised Statute provides for double-fines for speeding through a highway construction zone.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. Charlie Hebdo: Gun attack on French magazine kills 12
Gunmen have shot dead 12 people at the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in an apparent militant Islamist attack.
Four of the magazine’s well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were among those killed, as well as two police officers.
A major police operation is under way to find three gunmen who fled by car.
President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack “of exceptional barbarity”.
It is believed to be the deadliest attack in France since 1961, when right-wingers who wanted to keep Algeria French bombed a train, killing 28 people.
The masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris, where they hijacked a second car.

Time capsule dating to 1795 included coins, newspapers
BOSTON – Early residents of Boston valued a robust press as much as their history and currency if the contents of a time capsule dating back to the years just after the Revolutionary War are any guide.
When conservators at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston gingerly removed items from the box Tuesday, they found five tightly folded newspapers, a medal depicting George Washington, a silver plaque, two dozen coins, including one dating to 1655, and the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
While some of the coins appeared corroded, other items were in good condition and fingerprints could be seen on the silver plaque.
The capsule was embedded in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts Statehouse when construction began in 1795. It was placed there by Revolutionary era luminaries including Paul Revere and Samuel Adams, governor of Massachusetts at the time.

Boehner’s revenge: Payback has begun for members who opposed speaker
The House conservatives who mounted a very public, but doomed-to-fail bid to oust House speaker John Boehner are already paying the price.
After overcoming dissenters in his own party, Boehner won the speakership for a third term on Tuesday and lost little time exacting revenge. By Tuesday evening two Florida Republicans who had opposed him – Reps. Daniel Webster and Richard Nugent — had lost their seats on the powerful House Rules Committee.
And the roiling is going to continue for some time, according to Politico.

Springfield lists XD-S at new low price with Essentials kit
Springfield Armory is now offering the XD-S single-stack subcompact concealed-carry pistols in 9mm and .45 ACP at a lower price with the Essentials kit.
Like previous Essentials kits offered with the standard XD series, the XD-S Essentials package doesn’t come with as many accessories in order to deliver a lower price point. This is a smart move on Springfield’s part as many customers will take the savings over a couple of basic holsters any day.
The Essentials kits include a pistol, one flush-fitting magazine and one extended mag, two sizes of backstraps and grip extensions, a cable lock, a bore brush and a locking hard case. The minimum to keep and maintain the gun not including ammo or lube.
The changes are expected to knock as much as $100 off the sticker making the XD-S series even more appealing for concealed-carry. Springfield is offering the complete XD-S series with Essentials kits including 3.3-inch and 4-inch models in both calibers and finishes.
In 9mm these kits come with Springfield’s new “Mid-Mag” extended eight-round magazine instead of the original nine-round extended mag that should prove a little easier to conceal. And more options are always welcome with seven-, eight- and nine-round mags now on table for the 9mm pistols.
The .45 ACP magazines are still the same with five-round flush mags and six-round extended mags. As far as the guns themselves are concerned Springfield isn’t rolling out any changes to the XD-S sold with Essentials kits.

The sun came out tomorrow
WILLIAMS – If there is any truth to the wives tale that what you are doing on New Year’s day you will be doing the rest of the year, it should make the City of Williams happy. With the water problems the city has experienced, a reported 14″ of snow fell on Williams on New Year’s day. Flagstaff received 18″ while Mountainaire topped out at 20″.
There was expected to be a few more inches on New Year’s day, but instead the sun came out. The blanket of snow, though not enough to stay the water problem, was a beautiful sight. Since then the weather has been warm and the snow has been melting off.
The long range forecast shows sunny and warm through Friday when the next amount of precipitation should occur. Flagstaff has a 30% chance for a dusting of snow on Saturday and rain through Monday. Williams can expect rain showers through Monday.
This should help melt off much of any remaining snow, but could cause icy road conditions. Temperatures should remain in the mid-40s dropping to mid-20s overnight.
