Anna’s Grand Canyon Cafe prepares Mother’s Day present

640_092446WILLIAMS — If you are looking for someplace to take Mom this Sunday, Anna at the Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe in the Red Garter Inn has prepared a musical present.

The Coffee and Cafe will present their second musical guest on the pet-friendly patio this Sunday, May 10. Daniel H. Volkart Facebook will perform beginning at 10:30.

If you are looking for presents for Mom, you might want to check out Old Trail’s True Value Hardware on Airport Road. She could probably use that rechargeable, reversible drill or new power mower.

Orrr…. Maybe you might want to consider an outdoor table set so she can enjoy the summer. How about a barbeque grill so that she can enjoy Mother’s day every Saturday or Sunday when you do the cooking? Maybe you could replace that shower head with a massage unit. With water rates rising soon, it might be time to replace that leaky water faucet for her.

If you have these or any other home improvement plans that she might have mentioned, check out True Value. They speak hardware.

SR 64 east of the Grand Canyon National Park reduced to one lane

Grand_CanyonGRAND CANYON — Motorists traveling on State Route 64 just east of the Grand Canyon National Park can expect delays up to 30 minutes while the Arizona Department of Transportation crews apply a pavement preservation treatment on the roadway this Wednesday and Thursday, May 6-7 between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

During the work, one lane of travel will be closed with a pilot car providing for alternating travel through the work zone. ADOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time and observe posted restrictions while crews work in the area.

Future improvement projects along US 60 near Globe to cause heavy delays

PHOENIX — Motorists who travel regularly on US 60 between Globe and Phoenix need to be aware of a series of upcoming improvement projects that will impact traffic on the highway this summer.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is investing nearly $65 million in four critical projects in Pinal/Gila counties that will start this year and build upon efforts to upgrade the US 60 corridor, which is a major transportation route connecting the Phoenix metropolitan area and the communities of Florence Junction, Superior, Globe, Miami, San Carlos and Show Low.

“Improvement projects planned this summer along the US 60 corridor will ultimately enhance safety for motorists,” said ADOT Globe District Engineer Jesse Gutierrez. “Some of the projects will require significant traffic restrictions, so it will be important for motorists to allow extra travel time and plan ahead when construction starts.”

ADOT will work to minimize the traffic impacts by scheduling work hours on overlapping projects at different times of the day as much as possible. A detailed schedule of traffic restrictions will be released to the public prior to the start of construction.

The first project along US 60 will start in June, when ADOT will build a new westbound climbing lane and widen shoulders along a 13-mile stretch of US 60 from the Oak Flat area to the town of Miami (mileposts 229-242).

This $13 million safety improvement project will make it easier for motorists to pass large trucks and slow-moving vehicles whose speed drops because of the sustained grades along this stretch of highway from Devil’s Canyon to the Oak Flat area (mileposts 230-232).

When this project starts, blasting operations will require intermittent full closures of the highway.

Later in the summer, ADOT will convert the last remaining two-lane roadway segment on US 60 between Phoenix and Superior into a modern, four-lane divided highway. The $45 million US 60 Silver King/Superior Streets project just west of Superior (mileposts 222-227) is expected to take two years to complete and will include improving the urban section of highway in Superior. The five-mile-long widening improvements will improve traffic flow and enhance safety on US 60.

East of Superior at milepost 228, ADOT will replace the antiquated lighting in the US 60 Queen Creek Tunnel with a new light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system. This will be the first tunnel in Arizona to have this LED technology.

The new lighting system will improve visibility within the tunnel, which was originally built in 1952, by using an adaptive control system that will adjust the lighting level based upon ambient light and weather conditions outside the tunnel.

ADOT expects to replace the lighting system beginning this summer, which will require new conduit and wiring in the quarter-mile-long tunnel. The total project cost is estimated to be $3.8 million.

The final project on US 60 is a $3 million rock mitigation project along mileposts 228-229, where crews will remove loose boulders along this very rocky and steep section of highway adjacent to the Queen Creek Tunnel.

Doney Park Neighborhood Watch Meeting

FLAGSTAFF — Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll and District 4 Supervisor Mandy Metzger would like to invite residents of the Doney Park community to attend the monthly Neighborhood Watch meeting on Thursday, May 7, 2015. The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Summit Fire District Station 32 and Administrative Offices located at 8905 Koch Field Road Flagstaff, AZ.

Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll and District 4 Supervisor Mandy Metzger will be available to answer questions and provide support to this partnership between law abiding citizens, law enforcement and county government.

Our guest speaker will be Rick Emry who is the Housing Rehabilitation Specialist for the City of Flagstaff. He will speak about how the project applies to rural unincorporated areas of Coconino County. Coconino County Treasurer Sarah Benetar will speak about Coconino County Property Tax and tax exemptions.

Neighborhood Watch is similar to the Block Watch program commonly conducted in urban areas and goes back to the concept of “neighbors looking out for neighbors” that many people remember from 30 years ago. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent and deter criminal activity, attend to home and personal security, address the safety of our children and the elderly, and to alleviate fear and isolation. Residents learn how to observe and report suspicious activity and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

For more information about the Neighborhood Watch program and the meeting schedule, please call the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office at (928) 226-5089.

Golfer Bob Estes corrects tweet

BobEstes-tweet-1Professional golfer Bob Estes made a “tweet” after the shooting in Garland, Texas. His first tweet indicated that he felt that the Islam terrorists were exercising their Second Amendment rights in shooting people at the First Amendment display in Garland, Texas sponsored by Pamela Geller.

Estes, who describes himself as a Christian conservative, corrected his tweet later fearing that his first might be misunderstood.BobEstes-tweet-2To his credit, Estes did attempt to correct the misunderstanding. Unfortunately the tweet shows a lack of understanding of the Second Amendment prevalent in society. The Second Amendment does not allow the use of any weapon for criminal activity.

The Second Amendment does not specifically protect “firearms.” The Second Amendment reads:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

This statement actually makes three points. 1st, that the “People” are the militia. Not the National Guard. 2nd, that an armed people are the only protection of a free State.

The 3rd, and most important to this discussion, is that all arms, or weapons, are protected by the Second Amendment. A reading of Federalist Paper No. 29 reveals that training and arming the people equal to any standing army that might exist in the future is the only protection against the rise of tyranny.

So important was this that President George Washington established the Springfield Armory to keep the people armed with the latest weapons and devises of warfare.

There was no standing army until after the American Civil war. West Point was established as a training center for officers to take command of State militias in the event of a national emergency, such as was necessary in the War of 1812 and even the Civil War.

Benjamin Franklin noted this in his publication Information to Those Who Would Remove to America.

These Ideas prevailing more or less in all the United States, it cannot be worth any Man’s while, who has a means of Living at home, to expatriate himself, in hopes of obtaining a profitable civil Office in America; and, as to military Offices, they are at an End with the War, the Armies being disbanded.

The Second Amendment, in short, is to prevent this sort of activity by protecting the borders of the United States. That responsibility, in the Constitution, is placed on the militia. The Constitution lays the responsibility of ensuring that the militia is armed with “military-style” weapons on the national government in Washington D.C.

Kent Nutrition Group, Inc. Initiates Recall of Poultry Feed

IOWA — Kent Nutrition Group, Inc. is recalling one lot of its Blue Seal Home Fresh Starter Amp Medicated Poultry Feed. The recall is being implemented due to the discovery of excess salt in the feed concerning lot number 1015072.

Salt (sodium chloride) is an essential nutrient for all animals. However, excess salt intake can be dangerous especially if access to clean water is limited. Customers should contact their veterinarian if their birds experienced adverse health effects while consuming the affected product.

The poultry feed being recalled was manufactured in Columbus, Nebraska. Beginning March 18 through March 25 the product was distributed to six dealerships in Nebraska. Product is sold in 50lb bags. At this time, 64- 50lb bags of Blue Seal Home Fresh Starter Amp Medicated Poultry Feed Lot 1015072 remains unaccounted for. The lot number of the product is located on the tape of the sewed-end of the bag.

The recall is the result of routine sampling by Kent Nutrition Group which indicated an excess amount of salt in the feed. Kent Nutrition Group’s products that are not from this specific lot are not affected by the recall.

White Horse lake panorama

WILLIAMS — We visited White Horse Lake and found that it filled quite well from our fair winter weather. It was restocked last month with trout.

Camping space directly around the lakes are fee-based camping spaces, but they do have free day use areas. Along the road to White Horse there are free camping areas laid out.

The trails to Bill Williams Mountain are currently open. The road to Buckskinner and to the Santa Fe Dam are also open.

It seems that all is in order for a good camping, fishing and hiking season in Williams. Some are already taking advantage of the opportunities as space are filling up.
