Spring fire grows slowly

800-spring-2015-07-25-03WILLIAMS — The residents of Williams, Parks, Sherwood Forest and the areas in between should receive a break from smoke over the next few days. The fire has grown almost 2700-acres, but because of the rains the progress of the Spring fire has slowed.

Today the firefighters continued work on reinforcing the perimeter road boundaries to prevent the fire from spreading beyond when the fire flares up as conditions become drier. They are also lining archaeological sites, private property and other fire-sensitive resources near the fire area.

Smoke is expected to be light and mostly visible in the area of the fire along County Road 73. Summit Mountain Trail 68 is temporarily closed due to the fire activity.

Happy Birthday Milton Friedman

milton_friedmanNobel award winning economist Milton Friedman was born July 31, 1912 in Brooklyn, New York City, NY. Friedman was the undisputed champion of the proper capitalist system as described by Adam Smith in An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations published in 1776. He embarrassed the unconstitutional Federal Reserve by proving how they caused the Great Depression. Ben Bernake later admitted they “accidentally” caused the collapse of economies around the world.

Friedman correctly pointed out that in the era of less government regulation, the mass of the people were more well-off than in highly regulated society of today. In fact the “gap” between the poor and the wealthy continues to rise and the mainstream media questions what government regulation it will take to stop it. They championed the $15 an hour minimum wage in Washington which had the result of the loss of jobs as fast food restaurants installed ordering kiosks.

Of his many books, his most noted work is probably Capitalism and Freedom published in 1962. In it he points out the fallacy of “progressives” usurping the term “liberal” to describe their Marxist political philosophy.

His emphasis was on education in skills, instead of degrees in poetry and feminine studies, as a means to escape poverty. He founded the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice.

Milton Friedman passed away in November of 2006.

Spring fire smoke reaches Williams area

WILLIAMS — The smoke in Williams, Garland Prairie, Sherwood Forest and Parks area is originating from the 2554-acre Spring Fire centered about 9 miles south east of Williams. The fire started on July 2 and was converted to a managed fire to burn off excess fire fuels.

On Tuesday the fire could be seen burning atop Davenport Knoll. The smoke is heavy, at times, along County Road 73, also known as South Road or Perkinsville Road. At night, when the temperatures drop, the smoke travels lower to the ground and may become heavy in Williams and the surrounding area.

There is a 60% chance of thundershowers this afternoon and 30-to 40% throughout the weekend. If rains come it could cause problems for fire managers who are trying to keep the fire burning. If the storms bring mostly lightning, we could see more fires starting.

In either case, campers are reminded to take care with their campfires and make sure they are completely out when leaving. Fire managers set boundaries which they hope to keep the fire from crossing. Fires started outside those boundaries cause problems with management efforts.

Can you stop the Windows 10 upgrade?

As we have been reporting, the Windows 10 update is causing some problems and people might want to wait a few months before upgrading. If, however, you accepted the “invitation” of Microsoft to update, you may be forced to. Unless you can stop it.

We previously reported on a procedure offered by Wired, but that did not work. The following procedure from SuperSite for Windows did seem to work. Having tried it, it removed the Windows 10 upgrade icon from the task bar.

The update is KB3035583 and has to be removed.

We will present the steps from the article, but you may wish to check the article for the graphics.

1. Open Windows Update through the search.

2. Click on the Installed Updates link in the lower left corner of the window.

3. In the Search box in the upper right corner of the new window, type in KB3035583.

4. The update should be the only one to appear. Click on it and agree to remove the update.

You will have to allow the system to re-boot. I do still get a box that states that the Windows 10 download failed when I bring up the Windows Update. Hopefully this information will help.

Oath Keepers meeting at American Legion Saturday

Updated 7/31

The meeting will be held at the American Legion Cordova Post #13 at 425 W. Grant Street in Williams. The meeting is Saturday at 10 a.m.

Oath Keepers started out as an organization to encourage military and first responders to adhere to their oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States both foreign and domestic. The program is not just open to Williams residents, but anyone in Coconino County. Teams suggested by the Oath Keeper organization are emergency medical, communications and engineering, Security Teams and General Preparedness. Coconino County would, ultimately, develop teams required for their unique situation.

I-40 paving through Winslow

The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting on the final phase of paving through Winslow. Crews will be finishing the main portion of paving on both the westbound and eastbound lanes of I-40 this Friday (July 31) at (milepost 250-268).

Monday (Aug. 3) through Friday (Aug. 7) workers will be paving the interchange on and off ramps at Hipkoe Drive, North Park Drive, Transcon Lane and State Route 87. During this time, motorists will need to travel to the adjacent interchange east or west of the one being worked on to exit or enter I-40.

On Monday (Aug. 10), workers will begin to apply the final layer of asphalt over the top of what has already been replaced. This rubberized top layer allows for a quieter and smoother drive for motorists. This portion of the paving operation moves fairly quickly and it’s anticipated that crews will be finished by Friday (Aug. 21).

Crews will start replacing the SR 87 bridge deck, which crosses I-40 on the east side of Winslow, once all of the paving is completed. During replacement of the SR 87 bridge deck, north bound traffic will remain open during the entire project while southbound traffic will be diverted to the Transcon interchange.

Work hours will be 2 a.m. to sunset Monday through Friday. There will be narrow traffic lanes, wide load restrictions and a reduced speed limit through the work zones. Drivers are asked to use caution, watch for detour signs and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
