PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department was informed today that Governor Doug Ducey has nominated Lieutenant General (retired) Jeffrey (“Jeff”) Buchanan to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission.
LTG Buchanan earned a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology and is passionate about wildlife and natural resources conservation. He and his wife Laura (who also has a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology) are members of various conservation organizations ranging from the Arizona Elk Society to the National Wildlife Federation.
LTG Buchanan retired from a distinguished 37-year U.S. Army career in 2019, having commanded at every level from Platoon to Theater Army. His assignments included tours in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, 25th Infantry Division, 101st Airborne Division, the 10th Mountain Division, and I Corps. He served four combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.
From 2016-2019, he served as USNORTHCOM’s Joint Forces Land Component Commander and led the operational-level military response in support of FEMA for five major hurricanes (Matthew, Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Florence) and in support of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency for Southwest border security.
Upon retirement, he and his wife moved home to Patagonia, Ariz., where he consults from his home office. In addition to serving as a Senior Fellow for National Defense University, LTG Buchanan serves as a Senior Mentor for the Department of the Army. He currently serves on three not-for-profit boards.
In addition to his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology, he also earned a Master of Arts in Leadership Development from the U.S. Military Academy.
Pending confirmation by the Arizona Senate, LTG Buchanan would replace commission member Leland (“Bill) Brake, whose term is expiring.

AZGFD website details amended state regulations on four refuges
PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Commission recently approved amendments in support of new federal guidelines that expand hunting opportunities on four national wildlife refuges in southern Arizona.
The amendments, unanimously passed by the Commission during a public meeting Sept. 25 in Greer, broaden opportunities to hunt several species of small game, migratory birds and predators/furbearers for the 2020-2021 seasons at the following wildlife refuges: Cabeza Prieta, Cibola, Buenos Aires and Leslie Canyon.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently expanded hunting opportunities on national wildlife refuges for the 2020-2021 seasons. Hunting opportunities are authorized and provided on USFWS-managed lands in accordance with federal, state and tribal (where applicable) regulations and seasons.
PHOENIX — Notice is hereby given that the meeting of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission, scheduled for March 20, 2020, in Tucson, is canceled.
Due to current conditions and CDC recommendations about public events, the Commission meeting will be rescheduled to a later date.

The following candidates will be interviewed: William N. Collins, James E. Goughnour, and Patrick W. Headington. They were chosen from a list of eight applicants considered by the board at its October 23 public meeting. After the interviews on November 13, the board will select at least two or possibly all three candidates to forward to Gov. Doug Ducey for consideration for the appointment.
Per Arizona Revised Statute 17-202, the Arizona Game and Fish Commission Appointment Recommendation Board shall assist the governor by interviewing, evaluating and recommending candidates for appointment to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission. The board shall recommend at least two, but no more than five, candidates to the governor. The governor must select and appoint a commissioner from the list submitted by the board.

PHOENIX — The next meeting of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission will be at 8 a.m. Friday, September 21 at the Navajo County Mogollon Complex at 2188 W. Country Club Drive in Overgaard, Arizona.
The public can attend the meeting or view it via webcast at www.azgfd.gov/commission. The meeting also can be watched on streaming video at any regional office statewide.

The commission will be briefed on the range of ideas received during the recent 30-day public input period regarding establishing discretionary funding sources to provide support for a consistent, long-term public awareness and education strategy.
The commission will consider separate memorandums of understanding between the Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District and the Commission to prepare an environmental impact statement for the Alamo Dam water control manual update; with the Snowflake Unified School District to partner with and provide funding for students and teachers to design and implement wildlife conservation projects; and with the Natural Resources Conservation Service for grassland habitat restoration activities in southeast Arizona.
At 8 a.m. Saturday, September 22 the commission will participate in a field trip to discuss current and future cooperative efforts between the department, U.S. Forest Service, Eastern Arizona Counties Organization, various non-governmental organizations and local White Mountain forest restoration professionals to restore ponderosa pine forests on the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. The field trip will not be webcast.
