Doney Park Neighborhood Watch Meeting

FLAGSTAFF — Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll and District 4 Supervisor Mandy Metzger would like to invite residents of the Doney Park community to attend the monthly Neighborhood Watch meeting on Thursday, June 4, 2015. The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Summit Fire District Station 32 and Administrative Offices located at 8905 Koch Field Road Flagstaff, AZ.

Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll will be available to answer questions and provide support to this partnership between law abiding citizens, law enforcement and county government.

Our guest speaker will be Kate Morley who is the Coconino County Community Development Planner and she will speak about the Coconino County Comprehensive Plan. The Sheriff’s Office will provide a Woods Watch Program.

Neighborhood Watch is similar to the Block Watch program commonly conducted in urban areas and goes back to the concept of “neighbors looking out for neighbors” that many people remember from 30 years ago. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent and deter criminal activity, attend to home and personal security, address the safety of our children and the elderly, and to alleviate fear and isolation. Residents learn how to observe and report suspicious activity and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Our guest speaker will be Rick Emry who is the Housing Rehabilitation Specialist for the City of Flagstaff. He will speak about how the project applies to rural unincorporated areas of Coconino County. Coconino County Treasurer Sarah Benetar will speak about Coconino County Property Tax and tax exemptions.

Upcoming Neighborhood Watch meetings for Doney Park and Timberline/Fernwood areas

The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Summit Fire District Station 32 and Administrative Offices located at 8905 Koch Field Road Flagstaff, AZ.

In Timberline/Fernwood, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll and Coconino County Supervisor Liz Archuleta would like to invite residents to the monthly Neighborhood Watch meeting on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. The meeting will be held from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Summit Fire Station 33, located at 6050 Firehouse Lane, off of Highway 89N. Members of the Sheriff’s Office staff will be at the meeting to share information and encourage continued neighborhood participation.

The guest speaker at both events will be Charlotte Peterson who is an Animal Management Officer for Coconino County. Charlotte will speak about animal abuse, animal hoarding and will give a broad overview of the animal management department and county ordinances that pet owners should be aware of.

Community Deputies will be available to answer questions and provide support to this partnership between law abiding citizens, law enforcement and county government.

Woman held in Doney Park death

300susan-jacobsonFLAGSTAFF – Coconino County Sheriff detectives are continuing to investigate and conduct additional interviews in the death of 54-year-old Marvin Neal James at his home in the Doney Park neighborhood. Investigators believe this crime occurred sometime between the late night hours of Wednesday, February 25, 2015 and the early morning hours of Thursday, February 26, 2015.

Susan Joy Jacobson remains in the Coconino County Detention Facility on a $500,000 bail in connection with the death.

On Friday, February 27, 2015 at approximately 5:00 pm 43 year-old Susan Joy Jacobson came to the Law Enforcement Administration Facility and initially spoke with a Flagstaff Police Officer who subsequently referred her to speak with a Sheriff’s Deputy.

When Susan met with the deputy, she informed him that she shot and killed Marvin Neal James. She further disclosed that his body was still inside their home. While the interview continued, deputies went to the residence, looked through a window and observed what they believed to be Mr. James’s body. A search warrant was obtained for the residence.

While interviewing Susan Jacobson detectives obtained a general description of the location of the gun used in the commission. On Saturday, February 28 members of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit conducted an evidence retrieval line search in the area Jacobson described. They located a handgun that was wrapped in plastic and buried.

While in custody, she gave birth to a second child she has in common with James. The couple also has a three year old.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives Investigate Murder

FLAGSTAFF — Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives are investigating the murder of a 54 year-old man that occurred at a home located in the Doney Park Neighborhood. Investigators believe this crime occurred sometime between the late night hours of Wednesday, February 25, 2015 and the early morning hours of Thursday, February 26, 2015.

On Friday, February 27, 2015 at approximately 4:00 pm a forty three year-old woman arrived at the Law Enforcement Administration Facility and initially spoke with a Flagstaff Police officer who subsequently referred her to the Sheriff’s Office. When the woman met with a deputy, she informed him that she had shot and killed her husband, and further disclosed that the victim’s body was still inside their home.

While the interview continued, Deputies went to the residence, looked through a window and observed what they believed to be a deceased human body. They did not enter the home until a search warrant was obtained.

The suspect and the fifty four year-old male victim were not married but have lived together for approximately five years. The victim and suspect have a three year-old child in common and the suspect is pregnant with their second child. The three year-old child was present in the home when the murder occurred.

The suspect was incarcerated at the Coconino County Detention Facility on Friday night for one count of Second-Degree Murder and three counts of Tampering with Evidence. She is currently being held on a $500,000 bond.

Sheriff’s Investigators are in the process of contacting numerous individuals who are believed to be investigative leads in this case and interviewing them.

Both the victim’s and the suspect’s names are being withheld until such time that the release of additional information will not adversely affect the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Doney Park Neighborhood Watch Meeting Thursday

The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Summit Fire District Station 32 and Administrative Offices located at 8905 Koch Field Road Flagstaff, AZ.

Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll will be at the meeting to encourage continued neighborhood participation and to share information. Chuck Jones who is retired from the position of Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigations and is currently a Cold Case Investigator for the Sheriff’s Office will speak about investigating older unsolved homicide cases.

In 2005, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office developed a Cold Case Squad to review cases that have not been solved. There are over 28 unsolved homicide cases that occurred in Coconino County and which are being reviewed by the Cold Case Squad. Some of these cases date back to 1955 when many forensic tools were unavailable for investigations. All members of the squad are volunteers. Their background and experience range from forensic nursing, to crime lab analyses.

The goal of the Cold Case Squad is to be able to state with confidence that everything that could be done to try to solve a case either is being done or has been done. Man Arrested on Four Counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor

FLAGSTAFF – Coconino County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested a 69 year-old man of Doney Park on four counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor involving his granddaughter.

On Thursday, July 31, 2014 a Doney Park resident walked into the Sheriff’s Office to turn himself in for engaging in sexual conduct between the years 2006-2011 with his then eight year old granddaughter.

During a subsequent interview with Detectives the suspect made statements implicating himself in the crime of continual sexual conduct with a minor. The suspect was arrested on four counts of sexual conduct with a minor and was booked into to the Coconino County Detention Facility located in Flagstaff.

The suspect’s name and booking photo are being withheld in an effort to protect the victim’s identity.

Resident Stabbed During Assault

FLAGSTAFF – Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives are investigating an alleged assault during which the victim claims he was stabbed while fighting with an assailant who forced his way into the victim’s home. On Sunday, March 23, 2014 at approximately 2:00 pm Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatchers received a call from an individual who reported he was stabbed by an intruder in his home. According to the victim/caller the suspect left his residence before the victim called the Sheriff’s Office.

Upon their arrival at the residence located in a west Doney Park neighborhood, deputies examined the victim and saw that he had sustained a single stab wound in his abdomen. He received on scene medical attention from Summit Fire District medics and was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center by Guardian Ambulance where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to the victim, he answered a knock at his front door and was greeted by an adult male that was unknown to him. The stranger introduced himself as a private contractor and offered to do inexpensive roof repairs on the victim’s home. When the victim declined the offer, the unidentified suspect allegedly forced his way into the victim’s home. The two were engaged in a physical struggle and worked their way into the kitchen. According to the victim he obtained a small knife off of the counter to defend himself, and during the ensuing struggle was stabbed in the stomach.

The alleged intruder is described as an adult male with dark complexion, possibly Native American or Hispanic, with dark very short cropped hair almost giving the impression the suspect was bald, a dark goatee, approximately 5’11” in height, weighing approximately 190 pounds, and approximately 35 to 40 years of age. The alleged suspect was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and blue jean pants and exited the residence through the kitchen door.

Investigators believe this alleged crime is an isolated occurrence; the Sheriff’s Office has not received any reports of similar incidents. Detectives are pursuing this investigation in an effort to identify a suspect and to determine what occurred. Runaway juveniles taken into custody without incident.

raj-20140312FLAGSTAFF – Two juvenile runaways kept Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies busy beginning Tuesday when it was reported that they were in possession of a firearm. Thirteen year old Gregorio Mocasque and eleven year old Troy Stallings who were reported as runaway juveniles and were last seen at approximately 11:00 pm on March 8 in the Doney Park area East of Flagstaff, AZ.

On the 11th at about 1:10 pm while searching for the missing subjects, Sheriff’s Deputies and Flagstaff Police Officers found the hand gun that they believed was in the possession of the missing juveniles. The gun was found abandoned in a forested area close to Turkey Hill and Foster Road in the Doney Park subdivision. Investigators were not aware of any other information that would indicate the two runaways are in possession of any other firearms.

At about 5 pm, the runaways were in custody by Sheriff’s deputies without incident after receiving a tip from a woman in Doney Park who had received a flier earlier. The boys were released to the custody of the Juvenile Detention Center.

“The men and women of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office consider themselves very fortunate to serve in a county where community members partner with law enforcement to report suspicious persons and activity and are vital in promoting neighborhood safety,” the press release said.

The Sheriffs department also thanked the Flagstaff Police department, United States Marshall’s Task force, the Sheriff’s Civilian Patrol Volunteers and the Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Helicopter crew for their assistance in the search.
