The death toll from the Ebola epidemic has climbed above 2,000, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Friday, as it voiced hopes a vaccine could be available in November.

However, supplies of experimental medicines — including the prototype drug ZMapp — are limited, and “will not be sufficient for several months to come,” the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned Friday.

Protalix, an Israeli biopharmaceutical company, said Saturday that it has the resources to produce the coveted ZMapp, which has recently run out, Israeli site The Times of Israel, citing Channel 2 TV’s report, said Sunday.

The Ebola virus is the cause of a viral hemorrhagic fever disease that is highly contagious through bodily fluid transmission. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, weakness, aches, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, lack of appetite and abdominal bleeding.

SOUTHCOM Commander keeps eye on Ebola situation

Gen. John F. KellyMarine General John F. Kelly, Commander of U.S. Southern Command, gave a warning to the National Defense University on Wednesday that the spread of Ebola to Central and South America could cause a mass exodus to the United States from fear. Some with the Ebola disease could illegally enter the United States for treatment.

According to DoD News,

“By the end of the year, there’s supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention],” Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly said. “That’s horrific. And there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.”

The General said if the disease gets to countries like Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador, it will cause a panic and people will flee the region.

“If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.”

He also noted that transnational criminal networks could smuggle those carrying Ebola to the U.S. southern border. This was the reported situation with M-13 gang members and children with diseases being smuggled by the Mexican drug cartel into the US with Mexican government knowledge several months ago.

Kelly spoke of visiting the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua with U.S. embassy personnel. At that time, a group of men “were waiting in line to pass into Nicaragua and then on their way north,” he recalled.

“The embassy person walked over and asked who they were and they told him they were from Liberia and they had been on the road about a week,” Kelly continued. “They met up with the network in Trinidad and now they were on their way to the United States — illegally, of course.”

The U.S. Coast Guard so far this fiscal year has interdicted almost 950 Haitians at sea trying to reach South Florida.

That figure refers to normal illegal attempts to enter the US and not because of a current Ebola outbreak.

NOVA airs program Surviving Ebola tonight

In December, 2013, in a small village in West Africa, a young boy died from the dreaded disease, Ebola. Over the next nine months the virulent killer would claim more victims than all previous Ebola epidemics put together. And for the first time, the disease escaped the isolated, rural villages where it had first appeared and traveled in infected patients by air to densely populated cities in several African countries.

NOVA will air Surviving Ebola tonight on PBS at 9 pm tonight. The program will air on Eight HD, Channel 8.1.

Payson man does not yet show symptoms of Ebola virus

PAYSON – The Mann family of Payson, Arizona are members are missionaries with CrossWay International. They work to share the Gospel of Grace and serve the Body of Christ.

According to the Payson Roundup, Allen Mann recently returned to Payson from missionary work in rural Liberia, one of several African countries beset by the Ebola epidemic.

He was contacted about his trip by the Roundup and found that he had simply voluntarily quarantined himself as a precaution, as reported by Channel 3.

Currently he displays no symptoms of the disease. According to the Roundup:

Mann was asked what he and his doctor felt were the odds he’d been exposed to Ebola on a scale of one to 10 scale. “A ‘one,’” Mann said.

The terrible effects of the disease may have already been felt in Arizona however. That of unreasoning fear.

Because of this incident, fear-mongering web sites have already spread the news that Ebola is now in Arizona. None of them report that the only way to contract the disease is by direct contact of an infected person or the fluids of the infected person. Is is not a disease contracted through the air. Ebola is not always fatal and patients generally make a full recovery.

This is one of the few areas in which Franklin Delano Roosevelt could be considered correct. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
