Williams Event Huddle scheduled for Monday

WILLIAMS – The annual Williams Event Huddle will be held again on Monday, January 21 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Williams Recreation Center at 314 Railroad Avenue across the street from the bank.

The event brings together various non-profit groups and County agencies who have three minutes to speak about the goals and visions for their particlar activity. The groups exhange contact information and assist each other where they can.

This year people may come in to listen to the groups and perhaps learn where they can get help or find organizations of their interest to join. The event lasts about two hours.

Museum Ship Amateur Radio event begins June 4

logo-09The Museum Ships Weekend Event, sponsored by the Battleship New Jersey Amateur Radio Station, will begin Saturday, June 4 at 0000Z ending at 2359Z June 5th. Amateur operators will have the opportunity to contact almost 100 stations including retired ships from the U.S. Navy and Maritime service and Maritime museums.

On June 3, Ham operators can download an Excel spreadsheet of the participating stations from the New Jersey Amateur Radio Station web site.

The main operating modes will be single-side band (SSB) and International Morse Code (CW). There will be some PSK31 operations and some of the ships will fire up their origianl amplitude modulation (AM) equipment.

Brief closures of US 60 and US 93 in Wickenburg for special event

Due to a special event, the junction of US 60 and US 93 at the south roundabout in downtown Wickenburg will close briefly from 11:30 a.m. to noon Monday (April 11) and again from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday (April 15).

The closures will allow more than 200 horses and riders participating in the 70th annual Desert Caballeros trail ride to cross US 60 the highway safely.

What to expect during the closures:

  • Eastbound US 60 will be closed at milepost 110 prior to Tegner Street.
  • Westbound US 60 will be closed at milepost 110 prior to the Hassayampa River Bridge.
  • Traffic destined for northbound US 93 will be stopped at the westbound US 60 closure.
  • Southbound US 93 will be closed at the south roundabout prior to milepost 200.
  • The Wickenburg Police Department will enforce the closures and provide traffic control.
  • Drivers will need to wait for horses to pass through, no alternate routes suggested.

ARRL sponsors Rookie Roundup

ARRL-Flag-waving-Large_54The American Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) is sponsoring a six-hour CW (Morse code) contest on December 20 for specifically aimed at those who have had a license less than three years. (So you were proud of yourself for getting your Amateur Extra only to learn you are a rookie for three years.)

ARRL sponsors Rookie contests three times a year in April, August and December. In these contests rookies can contact anyone, but old-timers can only contact rookies. Various contests are held by ARRL and other organizations throughout the year. These for rookies are particularly useful to learn how to use the frequencies for the new license levels they attain. It is a great opportunity to test new equipment. Additionally they can obtain awards and certificates for all of these contests.

ARRL also sponsors specific events in addition to contesting where amateur operators can collect special cards, called QSL cards. QSL cards confirm a contact between specific stations or stations to events. ARRL, for example, is sponsoring a year-long event called National Parks on the Air where Ham operators can contact operators stationed at various national parks throughout the country.

For the upcoming CW rookie contest, the ARRL web site states:

Mission: To encourage newly-licensed operators (“Rookies”) in North America (including territories and possessions) to operate on the HF bands and experience competitive Amateur Radio operating. Experienced operators (“Non-Rookies”) are strongly encouraged to participate and help new operators – either on the air or in person.

Objective: Rookies exchange information with as many other stations as possible on the 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meter HF bands. Rookie entrants are encouraged to read “HF Contesting – Good Practices, Interpretations and Suggestions.” (Also available as PDF)

Electronic certificates will be emailed to the top five scoring Rookies in each US call area, Canadian province, Mexican call area and DX. No national winners will be recognized. A commemorative participation certificate will be available for download to every Rookie operator submitting a score.

Thunder Over Coconino this weekend at Valle Airport

640-140605eagleftVALLE – The Valle Airport (40G) is sponsoring the Thunder Over Coconino X fly-in this weekend. The event features guest speaker George Marrett. Mr. Marrett was the pilot of a Skyraider who flew “Sandy” missions over Vietnam.

You will also have the opportunity to fly in the 1929 Ford Tri-Motor aircraft for $99 a person. This is your only chance to fly in this historic aircraft.

The annual event will be held Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm. The event includes a pancake breakfast from 6:30 to 10 am for an additional fee. The event is $12 for adults and $6 for children. There is a max family package for $30.

640-140605valle2The event also includes a car show. The airport, however, has their own cars and motorcycles on display all year. Their display is free.

While there you can visit the Planes of Fame museum full of various aircraft civilian and military. The Valle Planes of Fame museum is the home of the L-749 Constellation which was used as the private plane of General Douglas MacArthur. The museum is not part of the event but is open all year long so you can visit anytime. The entry fee for the museum is $6.95 for adults and $1.95 for children under 12. Tours of the Constellation are $3.00

WILLIAMS – Bearizona is hosting a Backwoods BBQ on July 26, from 12:00 p.m – 9:00 p.m. This event will be held in the Fort Bearizona walk-thru area of the park and is open to the public.

Live country music throughout the day, headlined by Marble Heart at 5:00 p.m., will set the mood for the event. Kids can jump ‘til their hearts content and get some Bearizona ink, in our Kid Zone. Barbecue food will be available for purchase as well as local beverage favorites Grand Canyon Brewery, Grand Canyon Winery, Historic Brewing Company & all your domestic favorites as well.

Bearizona is excited to welcome the Phoenix Herpetological Society who will be at the event with an alligator and an 18’ snake that attendees, who are adventurous enough, can get up-close, touch and get their picture taken with them. There will also be Bearizona’s walk thru animals on exhibit for all to see, including those adorable bear cubs.

Advance discount tickets for the Bearizona Backwoods BBQ can be purchased by going to www.bearizona.com. $8 ages (4-12) and $18 (13 & Up). Tickets at the event will cost $10 ages (4-12) and $20 (13 & Up). Tickets will get you into both the drive-thru and walk-thru areas of the park, however the drive-thru closes at 7p.m. Bearizona pass holders get into the event for free.

Folks who are interested in staying the night are encouraged to book their room at our preferred hotel vendor The Grand Canyon Railway.

Bearizona’s mission is to promote conservation through memorable and educational encounters with North American wildlife in a natural environment.

Bearizona Backyard BBQ July 26th

backwoods-bbqBearizona will hold its Backwoods Barbeque July 26th from 12 pm to 9 pm at the Fort Bearizona Walk-Thru Area. The drive-thru portion of the park will only be open through 7 pm, so make sure you come early if you wanted to include this in your visit.

Annual Pass Holders get in free, but must pay for food, beverages and bounce houses. Pass holders must also RSVP for event by emailing bearizonawp@gmail.com with the number attending.
