Star gazing in Williams and flights in Valle this weekend

WILLIAMS — Two events are featured this weekend in Williams and Valle.

The Coconino Astronomical Society will be holding their monthly Star Party at the Glassburn lot area across from the laundry and Rod’s Steak house. These Star Parties allow you to view the stars and planets through your own telescope or with telescopes set up by the society. The Star Party season is coming to a close, so you need to get to one before they end. The party starts at about 7:30 p.m. and ends at 9 on Friday.

The Valle Airport Thunder Over Flagstaff begins early with a pancake breakfast at 6:30 a.m. until 10. The rest of the day at Valle Airport is checking out the car show and the various planes of history that fly in. You can also check out the Planes of Fame museum. Prices are included in the flier attached.

Weekend begins tonight at 7:30 p.m.

WILLIAMS — Begin the weekend in Williams by taking in the stars. The Coconino County Astronomical Society will host a stargazing party at the Glassburn Park area near the Zipline.

At 10 a.m. Saturday there will be a meeting at the Wild West Junction on the east end of Route 66 to discuss Community Protection Teams being set up by Oath Keepers. These teams are designed to provide services in a man-made or natural disaster. They are open to anyone; not just veterans, police and so-forth.

Saturday and Sunday is the annual Hamfest located at the rodeo barn at the Bob Dean Rodeo Grounds across the street from True Value hardware.

The forests have remained open this summer for camping and hiking. In recent years the forests were closed due to lack of moisture. So it is a great time to hike the trails and take in the lush green of the oaks and aspens and the beautiful wild flowers.

If you are bored this weekend it is not our fault.

Kaibab Lodge hosts annual Star Party

supermoonGRAND CANYON, NORTH RIM — The Kaibab Lodge will host the 7th Annual Star Party June 13-20 located at the lodge, just five miles from the entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park North Rim.

Astronomers from the Saguaro Astronomy Club (SAC) will be on hand with telescope to help visitors navigate the night sky. SAC is one of the larger amateur astronomy clubs in the Phoenix area.

“The sky here at the Grand Canyon is ideal for observing other planets, stars, nebulas, globular clusters, and many, many other objects in the night sky,” said Ellen Winchester, Kaibab Lodge owner and event host.

The Star Party will begin each evening with a lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. at the DeMotte Campground amphitheater followed by the viewing at 9 p.m.

Opening night will commence with a Star Party cookie party featuring regular and gluten free triple-chocolate “Deep Dark Secrets on a Starry Night” homemade cookies. Each night a pair of “El Winchester” earrings, designed especially for the Star Party, will be given away as a door prize.

“The Star Party is a wonderful educational event for the community. We especially welcome any children interested in astronomy. This is a fun and interesting science field trip, and a great opportunity to spend some quality family time together,” said Winchester.

Kingman show might have answer for your stocking stuffer

KINGMAN – Missing summer gun shows? Looking for the perfect Christmas gift? High Desert Event might just have the answer for you.

The group is holding their first winter Gun, Knife, Coin and Collectibles Show & Sale on Saturday and Sunday December 13th and 14th in Kingman, Arizona.

The event will be held at the 18,000 square-foot Mohave County Fairgrounds on Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $7 or $10 for two-day pass. Kids 12 and under are free with paid adult admission.

The event promises firearms and knives of all kinds, targets, gun safes, gun parts, military surplus and more. Table space is still available to you by calling 928-279-5406.

The event is heated and 24-hour security will be present.

Williams dresses up for Halloween

tarantulaWILLIAMS – It must be October in Williams. The trees are turning and the turantulas are out and running about. Williams residents and businesses are dressing up for the Halloween. You also have the chance to win a fall basket through the Williams Chamber of Commerce.

On the weekends you have the chance to ride Pumpkin Patch Train. The train runs Saturday and Sunday at 11am, 1 & 3pm. The cost is only $20 per adult and $15 for children.

The other big event is the Bearizona Howly Growly Owly fall festival. The event is included in the price of admission. Do not get so wrapped up in the event, however, that you forget to drive through the park to see the animals.

Of course if you want to do something a little less scary, the weather is still great for a Marvelous Marv Grand Canyon Tour.

On Halloween the First Baptist Church and Family Harvest Church are hosting family friendly, safe events. Both churches are located across the street from Safeway along Grant street.

The Tainted Angel LLC will host a Zombie Prom at the Sultana Theater to benefit SAVE Meant to Rescue. The $10 per person event will include a brain eating contest, Cash Bar, photo booth, 80’s theme dance, contest and prizes and more.

The Williams Chamber of Commerce is currently running a scarecrow contest as part of their Alpine Harvest Festival. Several of the businesses have put up scarecrows and you could win a fall gift basket simply by judging the entries.

You can obtain a form from the Williams Visitor Center or any of the participating businesses. Judge a minimum of nine of the scarecrows and rate them each from 1 to 5. Make sure you obtain a sticker from the participating business. Drop off your entry at the Williams Visitor Center by October 29 in order to win the gift basket. You need not be present to win.

Three fundraising events this weekend

WILLIAMS – This weekend a fashion show will be held at the Sultana Theater beginning at 6pm on Saturday. Habitat for Humanity and KZBX radio will be holding fundraisers.

On Friday October 10, Amanda’s Beauty Box and 66 Boutique will host a Runway Fashion Show at the Sultana Theater on Route 66. The show starts at 6pm and the cost is $10. The show includes appetizers and champagne and fun things to try. There will be a raffle for prizes. A DJ will provide music after the show. The proceeds benefit Williams Meant to Rescue. From 6:30 to 9 p.m., Williams Habitat for Humanity will hold its annual Fall Opry Night Friday night. Music will be provided by the Williams Opry Band at the rodeo barn located across from the hardware store at the corner of Rodeo and Airport roads. The cost for the event is $6 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. The event includes a cake walk, door prizes, raffles, and valuable auction items.

On Saturday October 11, KZBX 92.1 will be holding a yard sale to help finance the operation of the not-for-profit station. The sale will be held at the First Baptist Church parking lot at 629 W. Grant Avenue across the street from the Safeway parking lot. The event will run from 8am to 3pm. Donations for the event may be dropped off on Friday October 10 from noon to 5pm.

Early risers form up for Cool Country Cruise-In

ccci140808-04WILLIAMS – Some of the classics in for the Cool Country Cruise-In event on Route 66 in Williams started lining up about 7:30 today. The annual event brings classic cars from several States.

Drivers are reminded that the speed limit is reduced to 15-miles per hour from First Street east to the end of Bill Williams Avenue (Route 66) for the event. Drivers need to watch for pedestrians and photographers.

The Matthew J. Broehm VFW post will be selling raffle tickets for the tactical shotgun which will be drawn for today.

Cars are not the only events available this weekend. The Friends of the Williams Aquatic Center will host a free swim and party with pizza, snow cones and beverages on Saturday, August 9 from noon to 2 pm. The pool will then go to a reduced schedule open to the public only on Friday and Saturdays through August 30. The Friends are planning one more free swim and party on the last day of the season.

Bearizona is always open from 8am to 7pm. Cars begin to line up for the drive-through wildlife park even before opening. You will probably find Marvelous Marv’s orange Volkswagen Beetle at the car show, but his orange van will be available to take visitors to the Grand Canyon for his world-famous private tour.

On the west end of town near Safeway, across the street from Memorial Park, the Kiwanis Club Route 66 Street Market will be open. The Route 66 Street Market replaced the Swap Meet which used to be held in the same area. Proceeds from this event benefit the Kiwanis scholarships offered to local students.

If you are not into the noise and bustle of the downtown activities, the Kaibab National Forest is open for hiking and camping. Anglers should be happy because the Buckskinner Park reservoir is up to its aspens in water. Although the aspens did not flourish this season, the recent monsoon has filled the reservoir to near capacity. It appears that it has recently been restocked as trout are jumping. It should be remembered that a trout stamp is required for fishing in our local lakes.

The Williams watershed is open for hiking which means the trail from Buckskinner park is open. Alternatively one could travel seven-miles out Perkinsville Road (continue up Fourth Street past Santa Fe dam) to the Benham trail. Both trails are about 4-1/2 miles so take plenty of water. The Benham trail will probably yield the most views of wild life.

The weather is expected to be clear today with a 10% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow and Sunday. The chance of thunderstorms rises to 50% on Monday. Winds are expected to be from 5- to 10-mph through the weekend.

FLAGSTAFF, WILLIAMS – The National Weather Service long-range forecast shows mostly clear skies with cool temperatures for the heavenly viewing at the Glassburn Natural area across from the laundry and Rod’s Steak House on Railroad avenue. Everyone is welcome to come and take a peek through the telescopes set up by the Coconino Astronomical Society. The viewing starts at 7:30 and will end around 9:30.

Saturday there is a 10% chance of showers, but that is after 11 pm. Plenty of time to take the Art Walk sponsored by The Gallery in the Grand Canyon Hotel in downtown Williams. The walk along route 66 will begin at 6 pm and end at 9. Contact Kris or Tom Williams 928-635-3006 for more information.

The riders of the Queencreek Junior Rodeo might find it a bit wet on Sunday with a 20% chance of showers, but Saturday should be fine for the two day event. Saturday and Sunday the gates open at 8 am at the Bob Dean Rodeo grounds across the street from the Old Trails hardware store on Rodeo Road. The Queencreek Junior Rodeo Association is dedicated to providing a family environment in which children can obtain and develop basic rodeo skills. The chance of rain in Flagstaff on Sunday is 10% higher. The big event in Flagstaff, however, is their 12th annual Soar into Spring Kite Festival on Saturday. The event is free and open to the public from 11 am to 3 pm. The event is held at Foxglenn Park, 4200 Butler Avenue in Flagstaff. Most events are free, but there is a $3 wristband for certain rides, laser tag and other events.

There is always Marvelous Marv’s Private Grand Canyon Tour and the Bearizona Wildlife drive through park.

The forests are still open so hiking is available, but NO SMOKING is allowed in the forest due to dry conditions. In fact no smoking is technically allowed (except inside vehicles) at the Buckskinner park reservoir which is still open for fishing.

Also do not forget Sunday is Mother’s day. There are plenty of presents right here in Williams to get her. The Briar Patch provides flowers and gifts and the Route 66 Boutique just opened next door. Treats and Treasures has an assortment of candies and gifts, including coins for coin collectors, and features homemade ice cream. The Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe, which just received an award from the Arizona Highways, will be open Sunday for breakfast and lunch. Pine Country and Rod’s Steak House will be open for Mother’s Day and on the east end of town is Twisters and Goldie’s Route 66 Diner.
