Great weather for Grand Canyon “free” days.

Grand_Canyon
Grand Canyon – While northern Arizona is suffering a dangerously mild winter, it will make the entrance free days this President’s Day weekend a delight. It is also the off-season so the traffic should be light. Temperatures are expected to be 67 tomorrow dropping to 62 on Sunday and 59-degrees on Washington’s Birthday. Entry into the Canyon will be free February 15 through Monday the 17th.

The problem with the weather is that if northern Arizona does not get significant snowfall the rest of this winter, we could have a dangerously dry summer causing closures of camping areas and cutting into the tourist trade.

Another daredevil to attempt Grand Canyon crossing.

GRAND CANYON—On June 23rd, 34-year-old tight rope walker Nik Wallenda will attempt an 8th world record by crossing the Grand Canyon. His last record was crossing Niagra Falls.

A poll by Niagara Bullet News asks readers if they will watch the Grand Canyon attempt. As of this writing 53.6% said they wouldn’t miss it, 36% said they were not interested with the rest not sure what they will be doing June 23rd.

Nik Wallenda was born in Sarasota, Florida as a seventh-generation member of the famous Flying Wallenda family. His parents are Delilah Wallenda and Terry Troffer.

Wallenda credits God for his success, saying that what he does on the high-wire is a gift from God. He grew up in a “a Bible-believing, God-fearing family” and describes himself as a “born-again Christian”. Faith is “the most important part of my life,” he says. Before every wire walk, he joins his family in prayer and he always wears a cross as he performs. He remarks, “The Bible says pray without ceasing and I’m always praying.”

Mom’s store opens, appropriately, in time for Mother’s Day

Treats and Treasures - 309 West Route 66

Treats and Treasures – 309 West Route 66

WILLIAMS—Glenn and Linda have been working for several months to open Treats n Treasures at 309 W Route 66 next to the Sultana Theater. They are the friendly managers for the store owned by their mother. Although they have not received all of their stock, they managed to open, appropriately, just before Mother’s Day.

Treats N Treasures carries a varied assortment of candies from the new to the kind that your grandfather used to buy. An interesting item is a cup with a mix of candies from the 60s, 70s or 80s. Something that you usually do not find in a candy store is a variety of fresh fruit for the health crowd. Also in stock is a variety of gourmet popcorn with flavors such as peanut butter cup, white truffle Parmesan and cookies and cream. Beef and pork jerky is also available.

130512-04-TreasuresIn addition they have gourmet ice cream with your choice of waffle, sugar or old fashioned cone. For the morning crowd, they have coffee and gourmet pastries.

The store carries a wide variety of sodas with cane sugar instead of the more dangerous high fructose corn syrup. The selection includes a variety of flavors and brands. It would probably not be too hard to guess where Capone comes from. They also have a brand called Moxie which was sold in the early 1800’s originally as an elixir to cure all ills.

They carry souvenirs, like many of the stores. Their selection is a little bit different from the normal Route 66 fare available at other souvenir shops. The shop carries a limited selection of collectible coins and paper money such as a colorized Grand Canyon park two dollar bill and silver Arizona coin.

Their differing variety of stock should make this store a welcome addition to the Route 66 business community.

Jarvis allows water bottle ban for State parks

GRAND CANYON—The National Parks Traveler is reporting that National Parks Service director Jarvis is allowing parks to ban plastic water bottles after allegations that Coca-Cola company pressured a reversal of the decision for the Grand Canyon.

Coca-Cola manufactures the Dasani® water product. The Dasani® water web site begins with a commercial on their eco-friendly bottle.

The decision to ban water bottles at the Grand Canyon and subsequent reversal seems to have caused such a flurry that it led to this new decision. The new decision allows park superintendents to ban water bottles after severe considerations.
