Tanker rollover closes I-17 northbound in New River most of Thursday

An oil tanker rollover has triggered a closure of Interstate 17 northbound in New River that is expected to last most of Thursday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Drivers traveling from Phoenix to northern Arizona destinations such as Flagstaff will need to use alternate routes Thursday through Prescott or Payson and plan for extended travel times.

The Prescott route involves using US 60 from the Phoenix area to Wickenburg, where drivers will turn onto US 93 until reaching State Route 89. Once taking SR 89 into Prescott, drivers can take SR 69 to Dewey, and then SR 169 to return to I-17.

The Payson route involves taking SR 87 from the Mesa or Fountain Hills area. About 20 miles north of Payson, drivers will turn northwest on SR 260 to return to I-17 in Camp Verde. Drivers should expect extra traffic on either of these alternate routes today due to the I-17 closure.

There is no estimated time to reopen northbound lanes of I-17 while a hazardous materials crew responds to the tanker rollover. Southbound lanes of I-17 are unaffected and remain open.

Paving work on I-17 near Black Canyon City resumes tomorrow night

adot-logo3The Arizona Department of Transportation will resume work on a paving project on northbound Interstate 17 near Black Canyon City (between mileposts 245 and 250) tomorrow night, June 11.

Overnight work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and drivers can expect I-17 narrowed to one lane, as well as the closure of the off- and on-ramps at the Bumble Bee/Crown King traffic interchange (milepost 248).

Crews will apply the final layer of pavement overnight next week starting on Sunday, June 15 through Thursday, June 19. Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions on northbound I-17 through the project work area and the overnight closure of the Bumble Bee/Crown King exit during work hours. Minimal delays are expected.

The $2.3 million project began last summer and included the removal of a layer of existing pavement, shoulder maintenance and slope improvements to rock walls but warm temperatures did not exist once the work was completed and must be for the final (rubberized) asphalt.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT begins I-17 intersection improvement at JW Powell south of Flagstaff

adot-logo3FLAGSTAFF – Work begins next week on the JW Powell Boulevard and I-17 intersection, with construction realigning State Route 89A at that location, and adding roundabouts at the Fort Tuthill County Park entrance and the I-17 southbound ramp.

Preparations for this project began last September when ADOT worked closely with Coconino County, the city of Flagstaff and the local utility company to remove trees within the work zone prior to construction starting this year. The trees were then used by a local non-profit throughout the winter. The area will be reseeded once the project is completed.

No traffic restrictions are anticipated during construction because the existing ramps and roadway can still be used while the realignment and roundabouts are constructed adjacent to current traffic operations.

The project is anticipated to be complete by summer 2015.
