Bridge rehabilitation project starting on I-40 in Holbrook

HOLBROOK – A bridge rehabilitation project will be starting Monday, Sept. 22 at the east Navajo Blvd. interchange on Interstate 40 in Holbrook.

The majority of this project will require crews to work underneath the bridge and there will be very little impact to traffic traveling on I-40.

There is one phase of the work which will require a lane closure on the westbound side of the bridge where crews will be working on the deck. During that time there will be lane closures and speed reductions for westbound traffic only. There will also be one day when work will necessitate the closure of the eastbound on and off ramps at the interchange. A message board will be used to give advance notice to motorists when that time is planned.

Work hours will be from sunrise to sunset Monday through Friday. The project is scheduled to be completed by late this year.

Serious accident on I-40 west near Bellemont

BELLEMONT – A serious three-vehicle accident occurred on I-40 west early this afternoon. Details are unknown at this time.

The accident apparently involved a semi and two vehicles. Traffic was detoured off of the freeway at exit 185 to the next on-ramp in Bellemont.

Williams resident Brenda Carter took these photos as she was caught in the traffic at about 1:15 pm. She said that there were no ambulances on the scene and it appeared that the clean-up operation had started.

Northern Arizona Gazette reminds drivers that the Labor Day holiday is coming next weekend and there will be many travelers on the highways. If you plan to travel, please rest well before your trip and do not allow distractions in your vehicle to allow this to happen to you.

Motorists traveling from Flagstaff to Kingman should plan ahead, expect delays

adot-logo-03aPARKS – Motorists traveling along Interstate 40 from Flagstaff to Kingman need to plan ahead and allow extra travel time as the Arizona Department of Transportation continues a rockfall containment project approximately 15 miles west of Flagstaff that will require weekly 30-minute rolling closures due to blasting operations.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, a rolling closure for up to 30 minutes will be necessary in both directions of I-40 near Parks (mileposts 180-181) to allow crews to perform blasting rock cuts along the highway and clear debris from the roadway. In preparation for the blasting work, westbound I-40 is currently narrowed to one lane through the work zone until the restriction is lifted on Friday afternoon.

A weekly 30-minute rolling closure is scheduled to occur at 9 a.m. during mid-week until the project is completed. ADOT will notify the public in advance of the weekly rolling closures until the project is completed.

The $1.6 million safety improvement project is necessary to protect motorists and prevent damage to the highway from falling rocks, particularly during monsoon storms and heavy rains, while reducing the frequency of closures due to falling rocks. Work includes rock excavation and scaling, installing rockfall netting and constructing a wider rock ditch.

This is one of four current I-40 projects between Flagstaff and Kingman. ADOT recently started a $13.6 million project to upgrade a 15-mile segment between Rattlesnake Wash, five miles east of Kingman, and the US 93 junction (mileposts 57-72). The paving project is expected to be completed this fall.

ADOT is nearly complete with a resurfacing project from Ash Fork to Williams (mileposts 146-161). The $10.5 million project started last summer, and following a winter shutdown, the project will be completed this year. In the same vicinity, ADOT is also working on bridge rehabilitation projects from Ash Fork to West Ash Fork (mileposts 143-147).

I-40 Rockfall underway west of Parks Rest Area

adot-logo-03aPARKS – Drivers traveling westbound on I-40 at milepost 180 to 181 just west of the Parks rest area can expect up to 30 minutes waiting times as part of a rolling closure to allow ADOT maintenance to clear the roadway during rockfall containment operations. This operation is part of a $1.6M rockfall containment project which includes rock excavation and scaling, installing rock-fall netting and constructing a wider rock ditch.

This westbound closure will be intermittent during rockfall excavation and scaling operations currently underway Monday through Friday from 5 am to 5 pm, and is expected to continue until the first week of August.

Drivers are advised to allow for extra travel time to allow for periodic closures. DPS and flaggers will be present to alert travelers when the closures are in effect, and communicate to drivers once the roadway has been reopened. Both westbound travel lanes will be open during the traffic clearing process following the temporary closure. Once the roadway is fully cleared and traffic can allow for another rockfall treatment, the road will temporarily be closed again to continue operations. Drivers should anticipate potential temporary closures at times during hours of operation.

Improvement project on US 180 in Flagstaff has started

adot-logo3FLAGSTAFF – Improvements include improving and adding turn lanes, new pavement and guardrail improvements between Columbus Avenue and Bader Road. There is currently work along the shoulder of the road with no lane restrictions. However, travelers using this route can expect delays and lane restrictions through the project area as early as Monday, June 9 as construction continues.

In addition, some night work will take place during the asphalt milling and paving operations to minimize impacts to heavier daytime traffic.

Motorists interested in traveling to the Grand Canyon can use I-40 to State Route 64 west of Flagstaff as an alternate route.

Interstate 40 paving between Ash Fork and Williams to continue

Winter construction shutdowns have lifted, enabling crews to continue paving work on Interstate 40 between Williams and Ash Fork (mileposts 146 to 162) starting Monday, April 28.

Over the next eight weeks drivers can expect a single lane restriction on I-40 in each direction during work hours, which are between 1 a.m. and 8p.m. Monday through Friday.

The work is part of a 16-mile repaving project on I-40 between Williams and Ash Fork. The work also includes new pavement, guardrail replacement, pavement markings and some bridge work.

The project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2014.

Visitors and residents should remember that speeding through a construction zone increases the fines. Arizona also has a “move over” law requiring all vehicles to move over for any vehicle with flashing lights if you can do so safely.

Demolition of US 191 bridge over I-40 scheduled for Monday April 28

The newly constructed bridge on US 191 over I-40 has been open to traffic for several months, now the old bridge must be demolished, which will bring the US 191 Sanders bridge and road realignment project very close to completion.

Demolishing the old bridge will begin the night of Monday, April 28 and last through the morning of Friday, May 2 with both day and night work hours.

Monday and Tuesday work will be from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and during these times I-40 traffic will be diverted to the east- and westbound on- and off-ramps. Work will then shift between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, which will only require narrowing I-40 to one lane in each direction.

Officers will be present to assist motorists on US 191 and I-40 and there may be short delays for traffic using US191. ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
