Interstate 40 paving work by Interstate 17 interchange on Monday, Nov. 14

FLAGSTAFF — Motorists traveling eastbound along Interstate 40 just outside of Flagstaff should allow for extra time for travel on Monday, Nov. 14 as crews perform spot-repairs to the roadway near the Interstate 17 junction (milepost 194-197).

Work will begin early in the morning and continue during daylight hours. The speed limit will be reduced through the construction zone.

Drivers should allow extra time for travel, use caution in the work zone and watch for equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but it’s possible that unscheduled closures or restrictions might occur because of weather or other factors. ADOT prepared to keep highways open, safe during snow season

towplow-in-action_cropPHOENIX –– With winter and the promise of snow in the high country rapidly approaching, preparation throughout the year means the Arizona Department of Transportation is ready to keep highways open and travelers safe.

Through its certification and training programs, ADOT has 400 certified snowplow operators ready for winter storms.

Regular maintenance by ADOT Equipment Services has the agency’s 200 snowplows ready to go. Last winter, ADOT spent $2.2 million, an average of $11,000 per vehicle, to keep its snowplows in top condition.

“It’s always difficult to predict not only how severe winter weather will be but where problems will occur,” said Dallas Hammit, ADOT’s state engineer and deputy director for transportation. “With our operators trained and our snowplow fleet up and running, however, ADOT has the resources necessary to respond to snow and ice around the state.”

ADOT’s snowplows working on Interstate 40 between Williams and Flagstaff will include a second TowPlow, a steerable trailer that allows one driver in a snowplow to clear two lanes. Attached to the back of a snowplow and steered by the snowplow driver, the TowPlow allows ADOT remove snow and ice more efficiently while using less fuel, and it frees another snowplow and driver to work elsewhere.

As with any snowplow, drivers approaching a TowPlow should slow down and pass only when the operator pulls over to allow traffic to get around. Remember: The road behind a plow is the safest place to be when snow and ice are on the highway.

While ADOT is ready to keep the roads open and as safe as possible in challenging conditions, motorists can do their part by preparing for travel in winter weather.

ADOT’s “Know Snow” website at azdot.gov/KnowSnow has tips that include adjusting your speed to conditions, leaving extra room between your vehicle and the one ahead, carrying plenty of food and water, and packing an emergency preparedness kit. Tips include carrying a small bag of cat litter or sand to provide traction if your vehicle becomes stuck along the roadway.

I-40 closed due to multi-vehicle accident

i-40-2016-10-19-01WILLIAMS — ADOT and Kaibab Forest Service are re-routing traffic due to a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 early this morning. The number of vehicles and fatalities is unknown at this time. The smoke from the Pittman Valley prescribed burn may have been a factor in the accident. Smoke from the burn has reduced visibility to near zero and may hamper rescue and clearing efforts.

Route 66 to Parks currently remains open, but it is highly recommended that you use extreme caution as the smoke is affecting visibility along the route. If you do not absolutely have to travel to Flagstaff, it is recommended that you wait to check conditions in about four-hours.

Stoppages on Interstate 40 near Williams Today through Thursday

WILLIAMS — Intermittent closures will be required on Interstate 40 near Williams (milepost 168) to accommodate overhead utility work Tuesday through Thursday (Sept. 27-29) from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily. Two temporary closures per hour are needed as crews work in the area and will impact both east- and westbound travel during operations.

Drivers should allow extra time for travel, drive through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction equipment and personnel.

Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) crews continue with paving operations on eastbound Interstate 40 near Flagstaff (milepost 196-197), just before the Interstate 17 junction on Tuesday (August 9) from 4 a.m. to noon.

Lane restrictions and reduced speeds will be in place during construction; please allow for extra time for travel in the area, and watch for crews and equipment in the work zone.

Paving work on westbound Interstate 40 to continue near Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) crews continue with paving operations on Interstate 40 near Flagstaff, Monday through Wednesday (August 1-3). A right-lane restriction and reduced speeds will be in place during construction from 4 a.m. to noon at the following locations:

Monday – Eastbound I-40 from I-17 Junction to Butler Avenue (milepost 196-197)
Tuesday – Westbound from Flagstaff Ranch Road to I-17 Junction (milepost 196-195)
Wednesday – Eastbound I-40 from I-17 Junction to Butler Avenue (milepost 196-197)

During construction there will be lane closures and reduced speed in the construction zone.

During construction there will be lane closures and reduced speed in the construction zone.

Northbound Interstate 17 construction between Kachina Village and Interstate 40 Junction

FLAGSTAFF — Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) crews will be applying Recessed Pavement Markers and other pavement markings on the recently re-surfaced six mile stretch of northbound Interstate 17, from the Kachina Bvd/Mountainaire road exit (milepost 333) to the Lake Mary road exit south of the I-40 Junction (milepost 339). Work will occur on Thursday (July 14) and Friday (July 15) during daylight hours.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zone. Delays can be expected during construction; please allow for extra time for travel in the area. ADOT advises travelers to observe reduced speeds in the area, and to watch for crews and equipment in the work zone.

Improvements continue on I-40 east of Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — The Arizona Department of Transportation continues with improvements on a section of Interstate 40 between Walnut Canyon and Twin Arrows roads (MP 204 to MP 218), approximately six miles east of Flagstaff beginning Monday (June 20) and continuing weekly Monday through Thursday during daylight hours until late August. Some Friday work may be needed.

Single lane closures can be anticipated within the project area to accommodate construction. Please observe reduced speed limits and allow for extra time for travel through the work zone.

A.R.S. 28-710 provides for increase fines for speeding through a highway construction zone.

Closure of bridge at I-40 Twin Arrows (Exit 219) on Tuesday

Arizona Department of Transportation crews will be applying asphalt overlay on the bridge for the Twin Arrows Traffic Interchange (milepost 219) Tuesday (June 14) from midnight to 10 a.m.

Access across the bridge will be closed for traffic during construction; however a detour will be in place to allow for travel in the area and to Interstate 40. Please see information below for details:

Detour for I-40 Eastbound exiting north (Twin Arrows Casino)

  • Travel east on I-40 past the Twin Arrows exit to Buffalo Range exit (milepost 225), then continue westbound on I-40 to Twin Arrows exit (milepost 219).

Detour for traffic exiting Twin Arrows Casino to travel eastbound on I-40

  • Travel west on I-40 to Winona exit (milepost 211) and exit eastbound onto I-40 at this location

Please observe reduced speed limits and allow for extra travel time while traveling through the work zone.
