barrasAn Army Ranger from Tucson has died after being shot in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced. He was among those who rescued former POW Jessica Lynch from an Iraqi hospital in 2003. The Pentagon said in a statement that Command Sgt. Maj. Martin R. Barreras, 49, died May 13 in Texas after suffering injuries in Afghanistan on May 6.

Governor Jan Brewer ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today. In her statement, she said,

Command Sgt. Maj. Barreras, 49, dedicated more than three decades to military service, including five years as a U.S. Marine before enlisting in the Army. … As we mourn this American hero, let us always honor all of our nation’s men and women in uniform with our eternal gratitude and admiration.

Border patrol agent injured, suspects shot near San Miguel

TOHONO O’ODHAM NATION, AZ (Tucson News Now) – (March 31) Tribal police and the FBI are investigating a shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol agent on the Tohono O’odham Nation.

The border patrol said the driver of a truck tried to run over an agent who was standing outside his marked unit around 12:30 a.m. on a road outside San Miguel, according to Sgt. Bryan Flowers.

Women’s free introductory clay target program to be held near Tucson

Ladies: Have you ever wanted to learn the fun and excitement of clay target shooting but didn’t know where to start? Clay target shooting is one of the nation’s fastest-growing recreational sports.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is offering free introductory women’s shotgun programs on Saturday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, March 2 at the Three Points Public Shooting Range, located on U.S. Route 86 just west of Robles Junction (about 25 miles southwest of Tucson). The program starts at 10 a.m. and will last about two hours.

The program will provide everything you need, including a loaner shotgun during the event, ammunition, targets, eye and ear protection, and expert instruction in a safe, friendly, non-intimidating environment. The program is based on the tremendously successful Desert Roses women’s shotgun shooting program held at the Ben Avery Clay Target Center in Phoenix.

Best of all, there is no charge. However, pre-registration is required, as class size is limited.

Special meeting of Flagstaff TEA party with Trevor Loudon

FLAGSTAFF—There will be a special meeting of the Flagstaff TEA party at the Flagstaff Radisson Hotel to hear Trevor Loudon who is promoting his new book Barack Obama and the Enemies Within. The meeting will be held Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and is free of charge.

The internationally renown New Zealand writer is credited with revealing the fact that Obama’s mentor was communist leader Frank Marshall Davis. He is said to have pieced together background research that showed that Obama’s “Green Jobs Czar” was a hard core communist. He appears in “Agenda: Grinding America Down” by Curtis Bowers; an award winning documentary.
