Walmart bomb scare results in arrest

On Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:52 a.m., Officers were called to the parking lot of Walmart at 2750 Woodlands in regards to what appeared to be some type of explosive device. When Officers arrived they located several propane tanks, an extension cord, and a battery charger.

A witness was contacted and he described two subjects in a white colored Ford Mustang who had taken the tanks out of the car. The passenger then left the parking lot and the driver left the tanks in the parking lot and drove out of the area.

Officers cordoned off the area, and requested the Bomb Squad to respond as a safety precaution. The Bomb Squad arrived and inspected the tanks and determined they were not being used as any type of explosive devices. After speaking with the witness and reviewing parking lot video, an attempt to locate was sent to surrounding officers for contact with the white Mustang.

An Officer located the Mustang and attempted to pull it over and driver did not comply. Other Officers in the area in unmarked vehicles located the car and described it as driving on the grass and driving in a reckless manner. The vehicle was monitored and was followed as it moved towards the Brannen homes area, and came to a stop after driving off the roadway and into the wooded area near the 1000 block of Dogwood. The driver ran from the vehicle and was quickly apprehended by Officers in the area.

The driver has been identified as 53 year old Berel David Stolworth of Durango Colorado. Stolworth was taken into custody and charged with Possession of Narcotic Drugs for Transport, Possession of Narcotic Drugs for Sale, Possession of Dangerous Drugs for Sale and Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement. This investigation is currently still under investigation, and further information will be forthcoming.

Walmart receipt scam may be a hoax

10488232_10201272146525278_5503251707837464755_nWalmart receipts, such as the one shown here, are appearing on Facebook with a scam warning. The recent one I saw indicated that it was a personal experience.

The basic scam claim is that the person checked the receipt after the cashier rang up and found $40 cash back on the receipt. The cashier claimed they could not take it off and offered up the $40. The supervisor called to the scene claimed the same thing and ordered the cashier to cancel the whole order and start again. The person claimed there was $20 cash back on this receipt, but it was corrected the third time.

Hoax web sites across the Internet universally agree that this is probably a false scam claim. Walmart has been attacked by several organizations and this could be another attack.

This, however, does not mean that you should let your guard down this holiday season. You should check the receipt for any irregularities and challenge them immediately. Look for double-charges and any extra charges. Most likely you will find only honest human errors.

You should access your account regularly to see if any charges are added to your credit card that you did not make. Report them immediately to your credit card issuer.

If something like this scam were to occur, Walmart or any other retailer would likely fire the person caught, at the very least.

Williams enters the fray – Dollar General coming

dollar-130514WILLIAMS—The Dollar General being built on Grand Canyon Blvd next to the closed Rosa’s Cantina is coming along. One worker said that they planned to be open in March, but have to wait until mid-June to complete some of the ground work. It is not clear if they will meet the June time frame even though the building may be ready.

What might be more interesting about this chain coming is it might be seen by industry watchers as another “base” in the “war” between Family Dollar, Dollar General and Walmart. One dollar store-watching web site notes that consumers are reporting that people are generally finding the best deals at Dollar General and Walmart—particularly the so-called “Super Walmarts”—when comparing them between Family Dollar and local grocery stores.

Bloomberg reported that the January increase in payroll taxes may have impacted the two low-priced chains. The article says that the resurgent Walmart store may also be impacting the retail sales of Dollar General and Family Dollar; no. 1 and 2 respectively in this market.

Family Dollar, for example, suffered its biggest loss in twelve-years dropping 13% because of the 2% increase in payroll tax that hurts the poor more than anyone. Analysts Bloomberg surveyed said that Dollar General was moving into its slowest growth period in three years. They had to cut holiday pricing over Christmas.

While most residents of Williams wait and purchase essentials either through Sam’s Club or Walmart, it appears that Dollar General is hoping to keep customers local in Williams and perhaps take in some of the tourist trade. This might actually be a good time for Dollar General, in fact, since Williams recently lifted the tax on food.

It remains to be seen what form of imaginative pricing that Safeway will have to develop to meet the new threat to their market share.
