Is there snow in your future?

20121214flagFLAGSTAFF/WILLIAMS — The long-rage weather forecast shows a slight chance of rain and snow on Wednesday for Williams and Flagstaff. There is another chance next Sunday. Little or no accumulation is expected.

Otherwise temperatures will hang between 50 and 60 during the day with temperatures just above 20s at night.

There is a hazardous wind advisory for tomorrow for Apache, Coconino, Northern Gila, Navajo and Yavapai counties. Wind gusts of 40 miles-per-hour are expected across Coconino County.

A fire watch will be in effect Monday for the northeast quarter of the State.

Santa Fe stops rising

640-15-03-19-3WILLIAMS — The rise in the water level at Santa Fe dam seems to have ceased. That’s the bad news. The good news is the wildlife is starting to return. If they start stocking the dam with trout, visitors may be treated by a visit by the bald eagles.

Williams received a little rain last night and could receive a dousing tonight. The rain is expected to clear up by tomorrow night. Next week it should be sunny with some cloudiness and temperatures in the 60s.

800-15-03-16-02WILLIAMS — Buckskinner dam and the old Williams dam are overflowing and Williams is expecting a wet week.

300-15-03-15-14Spring is apparently closing in on Williams with warm weather, birds chirping and bees buzzing.

The snow melt is causing the water to rise and Cataract Creek to flow through town. The old dam is overflowing, but keeping the duck pond full. Although the Buckskinner reservoir dam is now overflowing, Cataract Creek is not flowing as well as days gone by. It is good, however, to see water in the Creek once again. The rise of water at Santa Fe seems to have slowed.

Tomorrow the temperatures are expected to drop slightly tomorrow and through the week remaining in the mid-50s to low-60s. There is a 10% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow raising to 50% after 11 a.m. on Wednesday through Thursday morning. The chance of thunderstorms drops to 30% Thursday night.

There is a slight chance of rain continuing thereafter through Sunday.

WILLIAMS — Williams is receiving good news in the form of water run-off. The larger tributary of Cataract Creek seems to be filling quickly. It appears to have filled about 25-inches since Sunday.

The Buckskinner reservoir was not running over Sunday, but the smaller tributary of Cataract creek was running steady.

Marv Mason of Marvelous Marv’s Private Grand Canyon Tours reported that the levels in Cataract Lake are also rising.

There are two encouraging notes for the water trouble of the City of Williams. The snow from the last storm has yet to burn off. In addition it has been known to snow as late as May.

The forecast shows a chance of rain Thursday afternoon, but mostly sunny with highs around 60 through next Monday.

Man found deceased identified in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — On March 2, Flagstaff police responded to a call of a man who appeared to be sleeping on Woodlands Boulevard. The subject was declared deceased the medics at the scene.

The Flagstaff Police Department has identified the subject as 35 year old Kenneth O. Yazzie from Holbrook Arizona.

It does not appear that there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, although it does appear that weather conditions might have contributed to his death.

Yazzie had been wearing a sweat shirt, leather coat, jeans and cowboy boots at the time of contact.

This investigation is continuing and the cause of death will be determined by the Coconino County Medical examiner’s office.

No impact apparent from recent storm in Williams

SantaFe150304-2WILLIAMS – While the City of Flagstaff Utilites division reports good news for Flagstaff, the recent winter storm does not seem to have had a major impact on the water situation in Williams. It is unknown what a spring thaw might bring in the future.

One person noted in a Facebook post that a Flagstaff radio station reported that Santa Fe dam on Fourth Street/Perkinsville road was full. It is probable that they mixed up the Santa Fe dam reservoir with the Buckskinner Park reservoir which has been filled with well water. The consequence of that was a number of dead fish last August from the chemicals in the well water.

The only impact that the recent snow has had on Santa Fe dam is to cover the road in the center of the dam with snow. The road was put in place to allow dredging of the reservoir a few years ago.

The City of Flagstaff Utilities Division reported on their Facebook page on March 3 that the lake levels in Upper Lake Mary is now 60% full with future runoff from snow melt still to come. This represents a doubling of the level previous to the storm. They estimate that this totals 1.6 billion gallons of water. They deliver approximately 2.8 billion gallons of water to customers throughout the year.

Williams should see what impact the snow melt should have as the temperatures continue to increase into the upper 50s and low 60s next week. The long-range forecast shows a slight chance of rain showers next Friday.

Recent snow claims one life in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF – At about 7:58 on Monday, Flagstaff police officers responded to a call concerning a man who appeared to be sleeping. When officers arrived at 2800 S. Woodlands, they discovered a man face down and covered with snow.

The man was cold to the touch and pronounced dead by medics who responded to the scene.

No foul play is suspected. It appears the person died due to the weather.

The Flagstaff Police Department is attempting to identify the person and notify next of kin.

Snow turning to slush

640-0303151542-00WILLIAMS – Williams is glad to see the snow, but the inevitable melting caused slush and ice overnight causing hazardous driving conditions. Snow started falling this afternoon with blue skies. There is a 10% chance of snow before 11 a.m. tomorrow with a 20% chance in Flagstaff. More snow will fall overnight with little or no new accumulation.

March comes in more like a leopard

snow-150303-04WILLIAMS – The old saying of March coming in like a lion does not seem to apply to Williams, this year. This year it came in more like a snow leopard. After receiving about six-inches yesterday, Williams can expect up to eight-inches today.

Steady snow is predicted today for Williams with an accumulation of 4 to 8-inches. Winds of 17 to 21-mph with gusts of 31 are expected to keep it cold throughout the day. Tonight there is a 60% chance of snow before 11 p.m. New snow accumulation overnight of one-inch is expected.

The snow and rain is predicted to clear Wednesday becoming sunny with temperatures raising to the mid-50s by Saturday.

Walking in a winter wonderland

640-150301-21WILLIAMS – Williams and Flagstaff are seeing something they haven’t seen in some time. Snow. A real snow. Predictions of 7-inches in Williams have probably already been met and the snow is still falling. The snow plows are actually plowing something and some of the street lights have turned on.

The weather forecast predicts rain and snow today with winds of up to 15-mph with gusts of 24-mph.

Rain and snow is expected to continue tomorrow with up to 3-inches of new snow. Higher winds are expected tomorrow with gusts of up to 37-mph. The chance of snow drops to 40% on Tuesday and 20% Tuesday night with little or no new snow accumulation expected.

It is expected to clear up and be sunny and warm on Wednesday continuing that way for the rest of the week.

Although far from blizzard conditions, it is a welcome and hopeful sight for the City of Williams. This snow will probably do little to fill the Santa Fe reservoir without more snow later in the season to cover Bill Williams mountain.
