First piece of historic Route 66 pie sold today

WILLIAMS — Anna’s Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe has a $66 piece of apple pie which benefits the Route 66 Association to assist in preservation projects for the historic highway. The first piece was sold today to Michael Rioux who is currently moving to Virginia.

Michael said that he wanted to help the community in someway. So he purchased the first piece of pie.

Pie-15-11-19-02He has, however, done much more for the community. Michael is a veteran of Afghanistan and served as the Service officer of the Matthew J. Broehm VFW post in Williams. In that capacity he has assisted veterans and their families in getting paperwork and benefits due them. He has assisted a number of homeless veterans.

His concern for the homeless does not extend to just veterans. He founded Hope For The World ministries in the mall in downtown Williams. He, and his German Shepard Bear, took in donations of food and clothing to hand out to those in need.

Williams gets ready for the tree

640-1116-treeWILLIAMS — While snow fell, the City of Williams prepared for the reception of the annual Christmas tree on Second Street next to The Gallery in Williams. Williams received light snow throughout the day starting at about 9 a.m. while Flagstaff had already received a significant snowfall of at least 4″ overnight.

There were some reports of vehicles sliding on I-40, but no injury accidents.

The weather forecast shows snow before 8 p.m. tonight clearing up to mostly sunny tomorrow. The temperature will rise through the week to the upper 50s by Friday and lowering to mid-50s over the weekend. The temperatures in Flagstaff are expected to be about the same.

Spoiled Rotten has new stock in for winter

Spoiled Rotten Pet Boutique at 516 East Route 66 (near Goldies Route 66 Diner and I-40 Fleet Services) has stocked up on some winter wear for the pets. Until December 1 all non-food items are 30% off. They also just received a new line of crates. Along with the toys, winter wear and backpacks you are sure find something for the pet.

Williams City Council agenda items for tonight

WILLIAMS — The meeting, as usual, will begin with public participation. Citizens are given five-minutes to discuss a topic. They may be granted additional time by the council.

The Council cannot act upon items presented during the public participation portion of the agenda. Individual Council members may ask questions of the public or may respond to any criticisms, but the members are prohibited by the open meeting law from discussing or considering the items among themselves until the time that the matter is officially placed on the agenda.

The open meeting law does, however, allow the City Council to ask staff to review a matter or ask that it be placed on a future Council agenda.

The council will Approval of Purchase Orders and Approval of Check Register for Month Ending October 31, 2015.

The Council will hear a proposal from Randy Feucht of Running Water regarding locating a water hauling facility on City-owned property and may direct Staff on how to proceed.

The Council will also discuss a proposal from SBA Communications to extend two existing ground leases located at 502 East Route 66 and 1211 West Route 66 and may direct Staff on how to proceed.

Kaibab National Forest offers free Christmas tree permits to fourth graders

WILLIAMS — The Kaibab National Forest is pleased to announce that all fourth graders are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit, while supplies last, through the Every Kid in a Park initiative.

Every Kid in a Park is a nationwide call to action to build the next generation of conservationists. All fourth graders are eligible to receive a fourth grade pass that allows free access to federal lands and waters across the country for a full year.

In support of this initiative, the Forest Service is making available a free Christmas tree permit to every interested fourth grader with a fourth grade pass. For additional information about the initiative and how to obtain a pass, visit www.everykidinapark.gov.

In order to receive a free Christmas tree permit from the Kaibab National Forest, the fourth grader must be present with the fourth grade pass.

Kaibab National Forest accepting applications for fire positions

Do you know someone who may be interested in a career in fire on the Kaibab? From Nov. 2 to Dec. 1, 2015, individuals can apply for fire positions on forests in the U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Region, including on the Kaibab!

The Kaibab National Forest currently has three vacant positions that will be filled during Fire Hire. However, more positions could become available.

South Zone fire managers to treat piles during predicted snow

WILLIAMS — Fire managers on both the Tusayan and Williams Ranger Districts will be completing pile burns across the two southern districts of the Kaibab National Forest. The pile burns help remove fuel sources from the forest, and can be conducted while snow is on the ground to help mitigate fire intensity.

Tusayan Ranger District: Fire crews will treat 122 acres of piles adjacent to Forest Road 311, near Russell Wash, to the east of Tusayan. There are no predicted smoke impacts to Tusayan.

Williams Ranger District: Fire crews will be treating 233 acres of piles near the intersection of Forest Road 141 and Forest Road 102, south of Sherwood Forest, near McDougal Flat. Smoke impacts to Sherwood Forest are expected to be minimal.

All prescribed burning on the Kaibab National Forest is subject to approval by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and appropriate weather conditions. Williams gets 3-inches of snow

64015-11-04 005WILLIAMS — According to the weather report from Channel 3 news in Phoenix, Williams received three-inches of snow with Flagstaff receiving 4.5-inches.

While Williams received only a dusting overnight, snow began to fall at about 8:45 a.m. and has been falling steadily as of this writing.

Webcams around our area do show the impact of the storm that moved in Monday. The first image shows a view of the central campus. The camera view from the Weather Service in Bellmont shows a view of the San Francisco Peaks and the ADOT cam shows a view of I-40 around milepost 190. No significant snow fall appears at the Grand Canyon. These images are all from about 9 a.m. this morning.

Travel from Williams to Flagstaff may be hampered by snow and ice. A winter storm warning has been issued until midnight tonight. This means, of course, ice and we advise taking your time on I-40 and around Flagstaff.

Williams receives some hail with the rain

Hail-15-11-03-03WILLIAMS — Rain has been pretty constant since about 10:20 this morning and is expected to continue throughout the afternoon. The city also received a dose of hail and some thunder and lightning.

The rain is expected to give way to snow this afternoon and throughout Wednesday.

A high wind advisory has been issued through 6 p.m. tonight.
