Living a little more secure life

Popular alternatives to GMail, Facebook, Twitter and other spyware programs.

Privacy and freedom of speech, today, is on the minds of everyone. The group in the light who wants to be able to express themselves and communicate privately amongst themselves. Then there are the dark tyrants who want to suppress your rights and crush you. The tyrants, by the way, probably use some of the methods discussed in this article. There is even a movement by the Democratic party apartheid movement to “cleanse” Trump supporters, as expressed by a person associated with ABC. Democrats have expressed a desire to “hunt down” Trump supporters after the election. One Democrat even put out a video expressly threatening Trump supporters which was applauded by Facebook, Twitter and the other Silicon Valley crowd.

In this article, we briefly review some of the alternatives to Facebook, Twitter, Google and other spyware companies. Bear in mind, however, nothing is perfect. If you decide to move to MeWe, for example, you can expect that government spies will have accounts and track things you say just as they do on Facebook, though the alternatives make that a little more difficult. Also remember that alternative sites are getting hammered with new sign ups daily. So they may work slower especially during peak use. Also be aware that we have not tried all of these suggestions. Many of these were suggested at a recent Republican meeting I attended and I have added others that I have used. So please check the links and carefully read their web sites. Ask questions of more tech savvy people you know and email the company if you want more information.

It should also be noted that we are not presenting these ideas for people to use illegally. And by that we mean in deference to the Constitution of the United States of America. There are hundreds of thousands of laws on the books that do not pass constitutional muster. We could care less if you violate those. If, however, your are BLM or Anitifa or other domestic terrorist bent on destroying the United States and its foundational law, we hope you get caught. If you are a pervert using these methods to harm children we hope you are caught and sent to prison for the rest of your natural life. We are presenting this material for those United States citizens who want to live their lives as the founders intended.

Facebook

If you are tired of Facebook jail for posting something about Biden and the election when you have just seen a Hollyweed personality holding up the severed head of Trump, you might want to consider the alternative. I used to use the Teapartycommunity.com, but it apparently no longer exist. The current Facebook alternative seems to be MeWe.com.

I have been on MeWe since October last year. MeWe carries no ads and depends on the support of the people using it. You can set up one personal page and use it for free. Each additional page you want to set up costs $1.99 a month. You can also join as a Premium Member which gives you access to other features of the site, such as special emojis, online phone and other features. Even with Premium Membership, however, you still have to pay $1.99 a month for additional pages. We found this out when we started the Northern Arizona Gazette page on MeWe. We did find it worth the $1.99 a month to get news like this out there since Facebook will probably censor this on our page.

When I say there are no ads, there are no corporate ads. If you are using it free, every so often when you sign in you get an ad suggesting you upgrade to Premium. You can cancel it and move on unmolested. There are problems with this platform as with any. When I use Facebook, however, their spyware actually locks up my system after a time. I have not had that problem using MeWe.

Browser

There are two browser alternatives to those spyware programs built into Microsoft and Apple. If you are using Windows 10, you cannot remove and eliminate Microsoft Edge. You can download and use alternatives.

The first, and most popular, is Firefox. I have used it for years on the computer and my Android phone. While it is more secure than using built in browsers, some red flags have popped up in recent updates. You have less control over what comes up when you open a new tab. When you start to type something in, you get a list of the deep state companies that are interested in suppressing your liberties.

Lately I’ve been using Brave. I do not know if it is more secure, but my computer does not seem to get locked up by the Facebook spyware. It seems to run smoother like Firefox used to.

Another thing to consider in your quest for a more secure Internet is a virtual privacy network or VPN. There are some free applications for Android (and I’m sure Apple) phones and some free services online. It is probably worth giving a monthly or annual donation to the sites as they are worth it. What they do is, basically, reroute your Internet through other servers around the world so that it looks as though your are visiting the site from another location. It makes it harder for hackers and others to know where you are accessing the Internet from. The security company Lifelock offers it as part of their Norton utilities package.

Search Engines

Google tracks your moves on the Internet just like Facebook. When you make a search, they record it and share that information with what ever nefarious group they choose. There are two alternatives to Google that do not keep a record of your searches. Startpage.com and Duckduckgo.

I have used Startpage since it was called Ixquick back in the day. It eventually morphed into Startpage with several more features. It uses the Google database to provide search results, but does not keep a record of your searches. One of the interesting newer features is anonymous viewing of web sites. If you click on the feature, it blocks cookies from the site so they do not know you are there. This feature, however, could cause difficulty accessing some of the features of the site.

The other that is growing in popularity is Duckduckgo. Like Startpage, they do not record your searches, send targeted ads or track you in privacy mode. I discovered that Duckduckgo has a privacy browser for Android phones although not available for computer. When you do a search in the phone app, you get results like any other search engine. When you click on it, it tries to make the site visitation more secure. I have not studied exactly how, but I know that YouTube videos, for example, come up with just the video you want and no popups. I have started to use it over the Firefox browser app.

Emails

There are two ways to receive emails. One is through a mail reader, such as Thunderbird–which is not secure–or through accessing a web page, such as you do with GMail or Microsoft mail. Also not secure. There are two web based alternatives; Hushmail and Protonmail.

Hushmail is in Canada where privacy laws are different. You had to download Java to make the security work. I am not sure what it requires now as I have not used it for sometime. It is web based but allows you to pass encrypted messages. You can send messages to a person who does not use Hushmail by using a question/answer passcode.

The other is Protonmail. This system was developed by scientist of CERN who were looking to find a way to pass secure messages. This system is in servers in Switzerland where it is much harder to get legal access to the servers. Protonmail claims, however, that with their encryption, even they cannot access the email. There is also an Android phone app for Protonmail.

Both of these services give you one email account free, but add extra services for donations. For example, more email addresses with Protonmail and a vanity email domain with Hushmail. Also, for a price, you get secure forms with Hushmail to allow you to get personal information securely. Both of these are web based. So if you are currently using a web based email such as Gmail, these should not be that big of a transition for you. Used in conjunction with a VPN, any IP address logging would show the email came from another location.

Twitter replacement

The big Twitter alternative was Parler and it was doing well. So well, in fact, that it was shut down by the Amazon. Amazon is the big tech company that provides ALexa designed to spy on your home. They were providing web services for Parler but cut them off on January 10. I, as quickly, “cleansed” my Amazon account. The CEO is still looking for an alternative Internet service provider so they should be back.

The other alternative is Gab. The advantage of Gab is that they have been around longer and have their own servers. I signed up last night and noticed it is slow to connect. It is slow to move around the site. Since they are having thousands of people an hour flocking to the site, however, this is understandable. The problem is that I still cannot seem to get a confirmation email.

A phone app suggested along this line is Signal. Signal allows you to pass secure SMS text messages on your Android or iPhone. Signal replaces the native SMS app on your phone. To be secure, the person sending and receiving the text message must be using Signal, but you can send a text from the Signal app to one not using Signal.

How about a new operating system?

Finally, the biggest thing you can do to secure your system is to get another operating system. I’m not talking about upgrading your Windows 7 to Windows Spyware 10. I am talking about moving from Windows and Apple to Linux.

Linux operating system versions are called “distros” or distributions. There are so many companies distributing Linux that I cannot give you a definite pick for the perfect distro for you. The best advice here is start with a tech savvy friend who uses Linux and obtain advice through them.

Some provide a free version and a more expansive version for a nominal fee, usually around $50. All Linux free versions, however, give you the basic protection. Part of that protection is if you do anything, from updating to adding programs, you will have to enter your password every time. Once you download the program it is yours to use.

There are ways to use your former Windows programs with some versions. The program Wine is one way. Robolinux claims to run Windows programs natively, but I have not been able to get it loaded on a computer to find out. There are, however, so many free programs that are similar to Windows programs that you can download. There are card, dice and shoot ’em up games. There are DVD and CD burning programs and movie makers. There are programs for amateur radio and learning electronics, science and other educational programs. You can search for a list of these programs and download them via the Internet and that is why you need to enter the password every time.

Entering the password for access to the Internet, by the way, is a very paranoid security measure. If you have to enter the password for any changes, a hacker has to know the password to make any changes in your system.

There are also only a couple of anti-virus software programs. That is because Linux has been less susceptible to viruses. Of course, that changes. If you are going to use Linux for your emails, you will probably want to download a virus program such as Clam which checks emails for viruses. That is probably the quickest way to get a virus into your Linux distro.

For older people who are leery about venturing into a new learning experience, you might want to think about the studies that show keeping the mind actively learning new things may delay the onset of elderly mental disorders such as dementia. So securing your online life might be the healthy thing to do.

Summary

This article briefly touches on the more popular methods people are using for security purposes and protecting their freedom of speech. There are more, of course, and more around the corner.

What it boils down to is you. What you need to make your life feel more secure. Also make sure you are vigilant in updating programs and Linux distros that you use.

Northern Arizona Gazette now on MeWe

WILLIAMS — The Northern Arizona Gazette has made the move to MeWe.com. The staff has been using it on a personal level for several months and decided to move the news site from Facebook to the alternate social network MeWe.

There has been some misinformation about MeWe that has circulated. One point is that you have to pay for the service. MeWe is member supported and you can purchase various upgrades to the service. You are not required, however, to purchase membership for one personal page. There is a pop-up that you may see on occasion asking you to upgrade to premium to support the social media site. It carries no other advertising to pay for the service. Premium service costs $4.99 per month if you desire to use it. There are various other offers at the MeWe “store” on the site.

“Facebook just seems to have too much malware, including their own tracking routines,” said Northern Arizona Gazette editor Glen Davis. “My computer gets locked up every time I use it. So I authorized the move to MeWe which runs much smoother. It costs us $1.99 a month for the page versus free on Facebook, but with the censorship on Facebook and the spyware routines, we feel the move is worth it.

“I highly recommend that all of my Facebook friends at least try this alternate platform,” he added.

Northern Arizona Gazette may still use Facebook on occasion, but the main Social Media site will be MeWe. The news organization is also looking into how Parler.com may benefit it.

Channel 10 will carry The Grio network over-the-air.

LOS ANGELES– Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group is proud to announce its recently-acquired MGM over-the-air broadcast television network Light TV will officially transition to TheGrio.TV television network on January 15, 2021 – the start of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. The newly-rebranded broadcast television network TheGrio.TV will feature African American-focused content reaching over 100 million U.S. households via over-the-air broadcast television stations, cable/telco/satellite platforms, and free digital streaming.

TheGrio.TV – with its new network brand slogan “Our Culture Forever” – will feature movies, sitcoms, dramas, concerts, talk shows, variety shows, game shows, news, and lifestyle content.

Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of Allen Media Group

At one time owned by NBCUniversal, TheGrio.com was purchased by Byron Allen in 2016 when it had less than 1 million monthly active users. In Summer 2020, TheGrio.com achieved its peak of over 10.5 million monthly active users. TheGrio.com is now one of the most visited news and entertainment sites for the African-American community, and is the largest employer of African-American journalists. In the past 2 years, Allen Media Group has invested over one billion dollars in acquiring media assets, including The Weather Channel in 2018, and 16 ABC-NBC-CBS-FOX broadcast network affiliate television stations around the country. Allen Media Group plans to invest an additional $10 billion over the next two years to acquire other strategic media assets.

“The Grio – which means ‘storyteller’ in Africa – is the first platform to offer an online digital news destination, a free streaming app providing local news, weather, sports, traffic, and entertainment content geofenced to the user’s zip code, and an over-the-air broadcast television network,” said Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of Allen Media Group. “TheGrio.TV is especially important to me as it will both serve and uplift all viewers. TheGrio.TV is the first and only 100 percent African American-owned and targeted broadcast television network and free digital platform – making us truly authentic, without being filtered or controlled by others outside of the community.”

Kaibab Forest Service selling Christmas tree permits

WILLIAMS — The Kaibab National Forest is selling Christmas tree permits through Recreation.gov. Permit holders will be allowed to cut November 16 through December 24.

A total of 2,500 permits will be available for purchase through the Recreation.gov webpage for Kaibab NF Christmas Trees, which also lists details about designated cutting areas, maps, dates, and sizes of trees that may be cut. Five hundred permits will be designated for cutting areas on the Tusayan Ranger District, while the North Kaibab and Williams ranger districts will each have 1,000 permits available.

Permits are limited to one per household and will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis until sold out. Each permit costs $15.00 per tree. Permits designated for the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts will be good for one tree each. For the North Kaibab Ranger District, up to 5 trees may be purchased on a single permit. A processing fee will be applied to each transaction.

When purchasing an online permit, it is important to carefully read the overview and need-to-know information prior to purchasing. Visitors will also need to set up or login to a Recreation.gov account to complete the transaction.

Fourth-grade students can get a free Christmas Tree through the Every Kid Outdoors Program by entering their pass ID on Recreation.gov. For additional information about the initiative and how to obtain a pass, visit www.everykidoutdoors.gov.

Fire restrictions lifted in Coconino and Kaibab Forests

FLAGSTAFF, WILLIAMS — Stage 1 fire restrictions have been lifted for the Kaibab National Forest, and a reduced Bill Williams Mountain closure is anticipated to be issued in the coming days.

Although fire danger has decreased, safety hazards will still exist on Bill Williams Mountain while fuels reduction and forest restoration operations occur on the steep slopes, which is expected to continue through the season as conditions allow. The current closure on Bill Williams Mountain will remain in place at this time; however, the Forest Service is developing a reduced closure that allows as much access as possible while continuing to provide for public safety. Details of this change will be distributed when the closure is updated.

Fire managers have been evaluating conditions regularly since restrictions were implemented earlier this summer. While the forecast for the next several weeks includes dry weather and unseasonably higher temperatures, the recent precipitation and generally colder weather has helped reduce fire danger.

It is important to remember that wildfires could still burn uncharacteristically for this time of year, given the overall conditions of the forest. The public is urged to help prevent human-caused wildfires by ensuring campfires are fully extinguished – cold to the touch – before leaving them unattended. Abandoning a campfire is prohibited all year round.

Fire restrictions and closures can be found on the Kaibab National Forest Alerts and Notices webpage.

Stage 1 fire restrictions are currently lifted across Coconino National Forest, as key components and measurements that fire managers use to determine the implementation of fire restrictions have dropped, which has also decreased fire danger.

However, visitors should be aware of certain areas that have fire restrictions year-round, which can be found on the Coconino NF Forest Orders web page.

Coconino Forest briefly came out of fire restrictions when monsoon arrived in July, but then reentered Stage 1 fire restrictions on August 14 and has been in restrictions up until today.

Wet weather does not dampen voting

WILLIAMS — The drizzly weather did not seem to dampen the voting spirit in Williams as those who did not vote early went to the polls to cast their ballots. Isolated showers are expected to continue throughout the day.

Tomorrow and Thursday it is expected to be sunny with highs to the low 70s. Friday it will be breezy and cooler with snow expected over the weekend.

Today will end a particularly contentious election season. In addition Arizona will vote on whether or not to make recreational marijuana legal and to raise taxes for schools. Recreational marijuana was defeated last election and will probably be defeated this time around.

Fire restrictions to be implemented Friday for Coconino and Kaibab Forests

FLAGSTAFF, WILLIAMS –— Due to lack of monsoon precipitation and key criteria being met for restrictions, the Coconino and Kaibab national forests will enter Stage 1 campfire and smoking restrictions Friday, August 14 at 8 a.m. The goal of the fire restrictions is to protect public health by reducing the number of preventable human-caused wildfires.

Under the restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal, coal and wood stoves are prohibited, except within a developed recreation site. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or a developed recreation site. Using a device that is solely fueled by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed in areas that are barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet of the device. Fireworks are always prohibited on all national forest lands.

Fire officials acknowledge it is rare for restrictions to be applied twice in the same year, however these decisions are based on a combination of factors that are carefully measured. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include things such as current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, a variety of science-based indices, fire activity levels and available firefighting resources.

Fire restrictions are implemented to help prevent unwanted, human-caused fires and to limit the exposure of visitors during periods of potentially dangerous fire conditions. With no significant moisture predicted in the long term forecast, additional restrictions may be applied at any time conditions warrant which could include Stage 2 Fire Restrictions and additional closure areas as needed. Fire restrictions typically remain in effect until the area covered by the restrictions receives significant precipitation, at which time they will be rescinded.

An explanation of the different stages of fire restrictions and what is typically prohibited during those stages can be found online at www.tinyurl.com/firestagesexplained.

The Kaibab National Forest will also temporarily close the Bill Williams Mountain watershed just southwest of the City of Williams due to the area’s susceptibility to uncharacteristically severe wildfire and post-wildfire flooding that could result.

There will be a modified boundary of this closure area on the south side of the mountain reducing the southern closure boundary from FR108 north to FR122.

Forest officials would also like to remind visitors that having a campfire on the national forest while under fire restrictions is a violation that can carry a mandatory appearance in federal court. Visitors should use extra caution when recreating on all public lands during fire season.

Fire Restrictions to be Lifted Tuesday on Entire Kaibab National Forest

WILLIAMS — Due to significant and widespread precipitation received across much of northern Arizona, the Kaibab National Forest will lift all fire restrictions on all three districts on Tuesday July 28 at 6:00 a.m.

Coconino County has also lifted fire restrictions in the unincorporated areas.

The area closure protecting the Bill Williams Mountain watershed will also be rescinded at this time, and visitors can once again camp, hike, and drive in the popular recreation areas. However, due to the hazardous nature of technical work in the higher elevations where steep slope fuels reduction operations have been occurring, a revised area closure will be forthcoming in September to ensure public safety on that portion of the mountain as work resumes.

The districts have received a substantial amount of rain over the last two weeks relaxing the danger levels across the forest. Each year fire officials closely monitor conditions before decisions are made to implement fire restrictions and area closures designed to protect human life, property and natural resources. These procedures are used to help prevent unwanted, human-caused fires and to limit the exposure of visitors during periods of potentially dangerous fire conditions.

The Kaibab National Forest would like to express appreciation for all those who assisted our firefighters and patrol units with their compliance while under these conditions. When members of the public abide by fire restrictions and closures, they greatly help in protecting their public lands and adjacent communities from the threats posed by human-caused wildfires.

Tyrannical Phoenix government shuts down Williams parade by edict

An edict by Governor Doug Ducey caused Williams to cancel the annual Independence Day Parade. But there sure was a lot of traffic downtown this evening. I believe they were throwing a little tea.

OpEd by Glen Davis

Murphy’s Towing of Ash Fork was on hand in case someone broke down in the traffic jam.

WILLIAMS – INDEPENDENCE DAY — The Williams Independence Day parade was cancelled by an arbitrary edict of a tyrannical government in Phoenix ordering the cancellation of any celebrating of the day we threw off the chains of a tyrannical government that issued arbitrary and tyrannical edicts on the colonists. A move that, no doubt, please the Chinese government no end.

That means the Williams Independence Day parade was cancelled by City Hall. Although we understand Eager flat-out defied the arbitrary edict.
But there sure was a long traffic tie-up down Route 66 In Williams this evening beginning about 6 p.m. to about 6:30 p.m. The traffic was so heavy that it stretched from Monument Park on the west end of town all the way past First Street. Many of the vehicles were carrying American Flags. The traffic was so bad that some people tried to assist by marching with the vehicle carrying flags. There were tow trucks from Murphy’s Towing in Ash Fork involved in case anyone got stuck. Fortunately they were here. The Williams Police Department had to help clear up the traffic jam; the likes Williams has not seen in some time. The major traffic-jam was witnessed by a lot of visitors and residents of Williams.

If there had been a parade, I guess it would have turned out to be a disaster.

You know, I could swear I caught a waft of tea in the air.

Bearizona to Rescue Three Orphaned Grizzly Bear Cubs in June

WILLIAMS — Bearizona, a popular wildlife park devoted to providing homes for wild animals in need, announced today it will rescue three grizzly bear cub siblings in June who were orphaned after their mom was euthanized by the Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks Service (FWP) following a surprise encounter with a hiker. The park plans to build a 40,000-square-foot enclosure for the cubs by March 2021 that will be one of the largest and most impressive grizzly bear enclosures in the United States upon completion. The public will be able view the four-month-old cubs beginning Friday, June 12 in the walk-thru section of the park, where they will live in the established enclosure Bearizona reserves for bear cub rescues.

The three grizzly bear siblings—one female and two males, who each weigh about 40 pounds now—became orphans after their mom was shot and injured by a hiker near Dupuyer, and ultimately had to be euthanized on April 9, 2020. At the time, it was not clear how many cubs she had. Three days later, a ranching family spotted her three cubs huddled together in a nearby field and reported them to the authorities.

While waiting for FWP to arrive, the family grew concerned for the cubs’ safety due to an impending snowstorm and a male grizzly that lives in the area. Since they are adept at roping, the family was able to gently rope the cubs and keep them safe until FWP arrived and transported them to a wildlife center.

The cubs remained at the Wildlife Center at Montana WILD for nearly two months while the FWP staff searched for a new home that would meet its rigorous, scientifically based standards that include:

  • Exceptional animal care and welfare, including a curate trained staff
  • Veterinary care
  • Safety for the public, staff and animals they care for
  • Proper enclosures that can keep wildlife safely contained, allow for adequate space, include habitat features, and enrichment items for mental stimulation
  • Educating the public on conservation
  • Financial stability

“Bearizona Wildlife Park is a Zoological Association of America accredited facility and has in place many of the high standards that FWP requires. Both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks Service did a lot of research on this facility, which also got very high recommendations from the AZ Fish and Game, AZ USFWS, AZ USDA, AZ state veterinarians, and many others,” said Laurie Wolf, Interim Education Bureau Chief for FWP. “Bearizona has also committed to investing an extraordinary amount of money into building an incredible new enclosure and exhibit for these three cubs. Also, most of the bears they currently have on display were orphaned cubs that were often placed there from AZ Fish & Game. We also chose them because they get over 400,000 visitors annually and focus on conservation education.”

Bearizona Owner Sean Casey will personally transport the cubs from Helena, Montana to Williams, Arizona on June 3 using a jaguar kennel in an air conditioned cargo van with the assistance of his 25-year-old nephew, Kevin Jr.

“While it is unfortunate that this sort of thing happens in the wild from time to time, we are honored to be able to take in these three grizzly cubs and provide them with the best home possible,” Casey said. “We are beginning construction in June on a new 40,000-square-foot exhibit with the goal of making it the best in the United States for these incredible animals. Since we have a nimble team of skilled plumbers, electricians, carpenters and concrete artists, we anticipate spending about $1 million on an exhibit that would ordinarily cost most municipal zoos more than $4 million. Our main goal is to create a truly spectacular natural habitat where ‘bears can be bears’ in order to help us educate our visitors about the plight of the grizzly and the environments in which they thrive.”

The new grizzly bear habitat at Bearizona will feature a 200-foot-long by 24-foot-high cliff, two waterfalls, underwater viewing sections and a rock ridge from where people can look down, into the enclosure, or up, into the grizzly ponds. Visitors will be able to safely view the bears due to the construction of moats, railings and some glass walls.

American zookeeper Jack Hanna is especially pleased about this development, as he is a big advocate of Bearizona and the park’s ability to rescue and care for grizzly bear cubs.

“I have attempted to help Bearizona Wildlife Park get grizzly bears in the past because I feel it is one of the top places in the United States for North American animals,” Hanna said. “They give their animals plenty of space and surround them with professional and caring staff. Bearizona’s large yearly attendance ensures that millions of people will be able to be educated about grizzly bears and leave with a newfound respect for these majestic animals and the forests they call home.”

Bearizona is a 158-acre facility accredited by the Zoological Association of America and is currently home to 39 black bears and many other species of North American wildlife. The drive- and walk-through park’s mission is to rescue wild animals in need of new homes and promote conservation by inviting visitors to view wildlife in spacious, natural environments. Since it was founded in 2010, Bearizona has fast-become a must-see attraction when visiting the Grand Canyon’s South Rim or driving through Northern Arizona. It was voted among the top three wildlife parks by the annual USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards twice in the past three years.

Animal lovers interested in supporting the new grizzly exhibit can purchase many items at shopbearizona.com/grizzly.
